Dear Eileen, Susan and Greg, Brian and Kristen, and Grandchildren,

Although we are miles apart, each of you are in our thoughts and prayers. We are with you through that special bond of family. Our deepest sympathy on the passing of Lou. I loved that guy! I will always and forever have very fond memories of him, even though he was a devoted Boston Fan! Several years back, we enjoyed so much, your company during your visit to California, as I was reminded of the many wonderful family visits we had when I was young. I will always remember that time period as a young boy, Lou's warmth and how he helped me to actually enjoy and look forward to that unique (and to us strange) Boston accent! Almost made me a Bruin's Fan! Thanks Lou Scotti, rest in peace my friend!

God Bless you all!

Love,
The Baker Family

Lou’s Eulogy
June 20, 2009

Father Bob, Deacon Neil, friends, family, Eileen, Brian, Susan, Greg, Maeve, and Isla and Kristen, Lou’s cherished daughter in law, who could not be with us today, but is here in spirit. We are honored today to celebrate the life of Lou Scotti.
As we reflect on Lou’s life, we will remember how he touched us all- in so many ways throughout his life.

First and foremost, Lou was a family man- devoted and ever faithful to Eileen, Susan and Brian. Always proud of Susan and Brian as they both graduated from St. Michael’s College and grew to become outstanding adults. He adored his grandchildren, Maeve and Isla. During his illness, Maeve was a sparkle in his life as she helped take care of her Pop.

Lou loved the Cape – Falmouth specifically. As a young man, he spent many summers there renting cottages with friends. In the summer of 67, on Falmouth Heights Beach, he met an Irish girl- Eileen- but he called her Scarlett O’Hara- he would call her that for the rest of his life.

The eternal handyman; Lou was always doing projects around the house; from the time he and Eileen bought the house in Scituate in 1970 and spent their first week married scraping the paint off the house- to building their Cape house in 1981 and -as years passed and the kids grew, helping Brian and Kristen make improvements on their first home and “supervising” the building of Susan and Greg’s new house - an experience they will never forget.

A quintessential Boston sports fan, he knew his sports. Lou loved the Red Sox and lived to see 2 world championships - but he loved the Patriots even more. A long suffering Patriots fan from the beginning in the early 60’s, when they played at Fenway Park; he stuck by them and never missed a game. He set into play a tradition of gathering with family every Sunday to watch the Patriots that still continues today and in his honor will go on. How he reveled to see them win 3 Super Bowls. We will never forget the Pats last Super Bowl win. Lou turned on his music and blared Springsteen’s “Glory Days” and danced with Eileen. To add spice to Lou’s love of sports - as fate would have it – Susan married a New Yorker- a die- hard Yankees and Giants fan. So, for the past 10 years, the Boston – New York rivalry took on a life of its own in the Scotti household; Lou, Eileen, Brian, and Susan against Greg Smith- the New Yorker. Lou enjoyed and loved every minute of it.

Lou was a great friend and had many life- long friends – among them Billy, Al, Roger, Jim, Charlie, and Reggie who displayed their friendship during his illness visiting him often – lifting his spirits. He was a neighbor for nearly 40 years to; Jean and Jim Young, Phyllis Quinn, the Longs and the Thomas’s and their children. He always made Susan’s and Brian’s friends feel welcome in his home. Often it would seem they would come to visit to be entertained by Mr. Scotti rather than to see Susan and Brian. He was like a father to his nephews when they needed him.

We remember the things he enjoyed and what he was famous for:

• Telling stories about his antics in Europe when his National Guard unit was activated during the Berlin crisis in ‘61

• Teasing his mother Lucy and pinching her cheek lovingly

• Sailing his Seabee sailboat at the Cape- we all ran away when he suggested a sail- for fear he would drown us

• Trips to Santa Monica- for the King Crab Legs that he never got

• Trips to Ireland and a pint of Guinness and driving on the narrow roads yelling expletives that cannot be repeated in Church

• The recent barge trip in France that he always wanted to take and did

• Skiing – even though he learned at mid life – he skied until he couldn’t anymore

• Scouring the shelves at Ocean State Job Lot for Bargains with Jim

• Country music

• Bavarian Cream donuts- lots of them

• The annual Roxbury Invitational Golf Classic

• And after he retired meeting the guys at Jamie’s for breakfast

The illness he faced was the ultimate challenge of his life. He took it on with determination, and bravery that we could never know; fighting everyday for the strength to carry on as a husband, father, grandfather and friend. We must acknowledge and admire the dedication of his family Brian, Susan, Gregg and especially Eileen in the care and comfort that they provided for him day after day over the last 19 months. It was a courageous journey of love for them all –everyday knowing that it would only get harder. We can only hope that they will find peace in knowing that they unselfishly gave their best to care for him.

So Lou, as we honor you today – hopefully you are looking down on us and this final tribute as a reflection of what a good man you were, and how much you were loved and cherished.

We will always remember you, keep you in our hearts and relish in the memories and stories of how you touched our lives.
Go Patriots: Go Lou!!!

Eulogy given at Lou's funeral service, June 20th, 2009 at St. Mary's Church, Scituate Mass.
