Mark Dundas Obituary

Lived fully, gave fully. Mark D. Dundas, 57, of Orleans, Massachusetts, passed away at home Christmas Eve morning surrounded by his loving family. Mark is survived by his cherished wife, Gemma, his loving children, daughter Geneve, of Grand Prairie, Texas and son Ian and daughter-in-law Ashleigh, of Keene, New Hampshire, as well as his beloved dog, Elgin. The son of Paula Dundas of Winchester, New Hampshire, and the late Raymond Dundas of Keene, New Hampshire. The brother of Katherine, Charles, Robert, Snow, Ann, John, Paula, Mary and Paul. Mark was born in Keene, New Hampshire. He attended St. Josephs Catholic School and graduated in 1975 from Keene High School, where he lettered in two sports and captained the football team. Mark attended Keene State College and graduated in 1979 with a degree in English Literature. After a teaching sabbatical in England, Mark moved permanently to Cape Cod in 1980 and began working on the fishing trawler, The Joe Stephen, out of Provincetown. Working on the trawler allowed him to pursue his two great passions, the outdoors and writing. Mark later began a career as a carpenter, where for 30 years, he built and worked on numerous properties and homes on the lower Cape. He loved to fish and was a great sportsman throughout his life. As a life-long voracious reader, Mark mastered many skills including stonewall construction, woodworking, gardening and cooking. Mark spent his life giving and sharing all he had with his family and friends. He was a devoted friend to those who knew him intimately. Marks great intellect, unique wit, and many talents will be missed greatly by those blessed to have loved and known him. Mark and his family express gratitude to Davenport Mugar Cancer Center with a special thank you to Kevin Smyth-Hammond for his friendship and expert care. In lieu of flowers, a donation to Wounded Warriors in his memory is appreciated. Funeral Mass to be celebrated on Monday, January 5, 2015 at Saint Joan of Arc, Orleans, Massachusetts at 10:00 a.m.

Mark
My first trip back to the Cape since you passed was one filled with mixed emotions. Reflecting on all of our adventures on the Cape beach fires ,driving on the beach claming flats , the Pamet our last oystering spot and so much more.
To say I miss you is such a understatement. How many times gave I heard what would Mark say, what would he think? We all have a huge hole with your passing and missed each and everyday.
Your smile and laugh is etched in my mind.
Hanging in there ,love ya Burt

To Gemma and the Dundas Family--- I don't think I am, nor would Mark think that I was, over-reaching to claim him as my best friend. He is truly irreplaceable. He touched our hearts with fire, and we will always share that gift.

I, and the entire Cangialose clan, share your grief.

To the Dundas Family, I am so sorry for your loss. I read about Mark's passing in the Keene Sentinel. It was a shock for me, although I had not seen Mark nor heard much about him in many many years. I was his 6th grade (Keene Junior High School) teacher. Yes, this may sound very strange after so many years passing that one teacher would remember a student from so long ago. But, I want to share this story with you. Mark was a very wonderful student. He was bright, introspective, and always polite. He invited my husband and I to share a dinner one evening with his whole family. What a surprise when I learned how many were in his family, but I have to say, it was a most memorable evening as I observed a truly working together family. I learned that his parents encouraged each of their children to invite a favorite teacher to join them for a dinner. So, I was Mark's favorite then, but Mark was my favorite student, too. No, we're not supposed to have favorites, but how could I not. He was special. I've thought of him through the years, but never saw him again. As I read the obituary, I see that he did have a good life with a beautiful family who I know will miss him terribly. I note that his son, Ian and daughter in law, Ashleigh live in Keene. I am also in Keene still, having raised a family here, and retired from the Keene education system. My sympathies to the whole family. Very sincerely, Roberta Barry

Every experience that I had with Mark was vivid and colorful. He rarely did anything in half-measures and, whether it was digging a trench, fishing from his boat, eating a great meal, or waxing poetic about literature over a bottle of wine, Mark threw himself into everything he did. For those of us lucky enough to share these experiences with him, our lives were deeply enriched. I never left Mark without feeling inspired to bring the same intense level of living to my own daily routine. The last time I spoke to him, it was much the same. We spoke of our love for each other, we cried a little, and we remembered a few of the good times together. Mostly, Mark wanted to tell me how very much he loved Gemma and asked that we all look after her. I feel utterly bereft now that he is gone, but I cannot begin to imagine the void he has left in Gemma's life. Christine and I want her to know that we are holding her very close in our hearts and that we will always be there for her. Bob Dundas (Miami Beach)
