Martin Eichelman Obituary

Marty Eichelman died March 25, 2023 at St. Agnes Hospital. He was 101 years old. Born and raised in Baltimore, Marty was the third of Edward and Christine Eichelman's ten children. He worked as a toolmaker from 1939 into World War II at the Glenn L. Martin plant in Middle River, MD. In September 1943, he was inducted into the U.S. Army and selected for training as an aerial gunner on a B-29 bomber crew. In January 1945, Marty's crew deployed to North Field, Tinian, in the Northern Marianas Islands. In all, the crew completed 35 combat missions against the Japanese, the last on August 6th, 1945, the same day the atomic bomb was dropped on Hiroshima. After the war, Marty returned to Baltimore where he married Mary Jeanne Butta and, with her, raised three children. He joined and eventually headed a family business, Eichelman Brothers, Inc., in Arbutus, selling used auto and truck parts. He worked in that business for over 50 years. Marty loved to sing and was a long time member of the choir at St Agnes Catholic Church. He was also active in the Knights of Columbus and the Catholic War Veterans, and was on a duck pin bowling league team. Marty's wife, Jeanne, died in 2021, not long after their 70th wedding anniversary. He is survived by three children, Martin (Georgia), Nancy Handy (John), and Leslie Baumgardner (William); nine grandchildren; 14 great grandchildren; and one great-great grandchild.

Viewing will be Tuesday, April 11 from 3-5 and 7-9 at the Sterling-Ashton-Schwab-Witzke Funeral Home of Catonsville, Inc., 1630 Edmondson Ave, Catonsville.
