MICHAEL LOUIS SIEGEL
On Thursday February 15, 2018, MICHAEL LOUIS SIEGEL, long time resident of Washington, DC passed away. Husband of Amanda Broun; devoted father of Johanna and Rosalie Siegel; beloved brother of Frances, Betty, and David Siegel; loving son of Marilyn L. Siegel and of the late Ralph E. Siegel. Born in Louisville, KY, Mike grew up in the mid-west, and made his adult homes in Boulder, CO and Seattle, WA before returning to this region. He pursued a consulting career in land-use planning, public-finance, and economic development in which he strove to balance responsible community and economic planning. Mike's expertise guided many communities through the labyrinth of development planning, regulatory approval, legal proceedings, and financing. Throughout, he was an activist in the cause of community control over development. His family remembers with special pride the contribution of his technical analysis which resulted in the prevention of the construction of a large theme park near the Manassas battlefield. Beyond that, Mike's creative avocation for the design and fabrication of original custom furniture brought unique beauty to the households of his family and friends. Funeral services will be held on Monday, February 19, 2018 at 11 a.m. at Temple Sinai, 3100 Military Rd., NW, Washington, DC 20015. Interment Garden of Remembrance Memorial Park, Clarksburg, MD. The family will be observing Shiva Monday and Tuesday evenings. Arrangements by Hines Rinaldi Funeral Home, LLC, under Jewish Funeral Practices Agreement of Greater Washington Contract.

Of sorrows and loss, each of our mortal lives charts its measure. Here in the still dead of Winnipeg's winter, three weeks after Michael's unexpected passing, I've only now heard the hard news. What to say to dearest Amanda and hers and Michael's remarkable and spirited two girls Johanna and Rosalie? Too much, too little. Perhaps it's enough, from many other memories, to recall those many nights together of zydeco and tango dancing in Adams Morgan and elsewhere in DC. Long conversations, too, about lie and its detours and discoveries. For all of that and more, I remember and am grateful to Michael.
