Nancy Caplan Obituary

Nancy M. Caplan
Nancy Margaret Caplan of Old Greenwich, a longtime civic leader and chairwoman of the Greenwich Board of Parks and Recreation, passed away Saturday, October 28 at the age 60.
She had been battling cancer for over two-and-a-half years. She chose to keep her illness private, preferring not to worry friends or have people view her differently.
Despite her public role as chair of the Board of Parks and Rec, Nancy worked more behind the scenes, allowing those around her to receive recognition. She was a leader in the fight for a town dog park and re-established the Friends of Binney Park, a nonprofit created to supplement town funding to enhance and beautify the landscape. She was putting together "Binney Baskets," a fundraiser she created, until days before her passing.
As a member and president of the Friends of Greenwich Point, Nancy led initiatives to pay for improvements, including Adirondack-style chairs on the bluff, the "Barefoot on the Beach" dinner fundraiser, Images of Greenwich Point —a bound collection of artwork from local artists depicting Greenwich Point, and the annual Greenwich Point holiday ornaments.
Concerned by the rise of nonnative plant species at the Point, Nancy researched ways, such as bringing in goats, to remove invasives and restore the natural beauty. She also organized the first "Dune Raising" at Greenwich Point, spearheading the restoration of the entrance dune washed away by Super Storm Sandy and the planting of over 20,000 plugs of beach grass.
Born April 20, 1957, in Troy, NY, Nancy was the daughter of the late Joseph O'Brien and Helen Bailey O'Brien. She received her MBA from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, where she was one of the few women in her class.
During her studies at RPI, Nancy was recruited by IBM. She worked for the company for 36 years in Vermont, Japan and Armonk, NY, recently retired as a financial analyst.
Soon after she and her husband Jack moved to town, Nancy became involved with the Junior League of Greenwich, where she was a sustaining member. She held various leadership roles within the League, and is credited with moving the annual Enchanted Forest fundraiser from the Eastern Greenwich Civic Center to the Greenwich Hyatt.
When her daughter's Girl Scout troop needed a leader, Nancy stepped up. She received awards from Girl Scouts USA for her leader skills, and later became head of the service unit, being known for her creative events and leading two trips overseas.
When her daughter was at Old Greenwich Elementary School, Nancy was an innovative member of the school's Parent Teacher Association, creating unique events such as "Science Day, "Artists and Authors Day," and bringing Thermo Fisher Scientific's BioBus to OG's doorstep.
She is survived by her husband, Jack Caplan, and daughter Jennifer Caplan, both of Old Greenwich; a brother, Joseph O'Brien Jr., of Loudonville, NY; a sister, Janet Aram; and her two beloved dogs, Angel and Lulu. She was predeceased by a sister, Diane Parry-Hill.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Town of Greenwich Parks and Recreation Foundation. Please note if you would like the donation to go specifically to the Binney Park Restoration project.
A memorial service will be held Thursday, November 30th at 12 p.m. at First Congregational Church, 108 Sound Beach Avenue, Old Greenwich, CT.

Nancy, I am so sad to hear the news of your passing. When we spoke last you mentioned that you were ill....but then again, you always did think of others before yourself. I admired your intellect, your fun personality, your dedication to your family and the community. You've made an impact on so many lives. I'll always remember our chats at work. Rest in Peace.

My experience knowing Nancy was born from sporting adventures Jen and my daughter, Franny, shared. Nancy was such a Can Do, Why Not, Nothing Can Stop her, energetic, positive person. I always felt "Wowed" by her multiple activities and endeavors- not to mention her full time job. Her creativity and heartfelt enthusiasm for youthful enterprises - soccer teams, sailing, Girl Scouts, you name it, was remarkable- She was an exceptional role model.

Nancy was beautiful both inside and outwardly. Her kindness was limitless.
To top that, she was one of the brightest business minds I've ever known. When we had dinner parties at our home, I always (selfishly) arranged to be seated next to Nancy. In the early and mid 90s, she was educating me on the future - including the Cloud.
We will miss her.

I am stunned to learn of Nancy's passing. I cannot begin to imagine the depth of loss for her family and friends. I met Nancy in the Junior League of Greenwich where she gave selflessly of her time, talent and energy. She was always so gracious and kind, a team player but also a wonderful leader. She will be missed so very much, by so many.

I am shocked to learn of Nancy's passing. From the moment I met her, she was a sparkling, friend;y member of Rocky Point and - when I joined last year - the OG Garden Club. My heart goes out to Jack and Jennifer. We lost her much too soon.

Our family was also among the group of friends that was lucky enough to have known Nancy for over twenty years. Nancy was a leader among leaders. Her kindness, generosity and business savvy were just a few of the talents that made you want to get to know her, and once you did, you knew that she was someone that you would never forget. She was just that kind of person.

She approached life with high-spirits and a beautiful smile that was always accompanied with a gentle note of laughter. Nancy will forever live in our hearts and memories.

With much love,

My husband David and I were part of the group of friends mentioned by Suzanne DePalo in her tribute to Nancy. We agree completely with everything Suzanne said. Nancy was a wonderful friend and the most creative person I've ever met - no matter what the topic Nancy had several suggestions. Her fight over the past almost three years was managed with a very positive attitude and incredible strength. We never spent time with Nancy when she didn't mention how much John and Jennifer helped her and were always there for her. A story about one of the many trips we shared - Suzanne and her husband, John and Nancy and David and I rented a home in Positano on the Amalfi Coast. There was a lemon tree on the terrace. John and Nancy said - when you are given a lemon you make lemonade - and that was exactly what they did. Nancy will be so missed.

I crossed paths with Nancy through many organizations and committees in town, from North Mianus, to Girl Scouts, to Tod's Point, to Binney Park, etc. I was always inspired by her enthusiasm, let's-get-it-done attitude, her ever-ready smile, and her generosity. I will miss her. I send my deepest condolences to her family.

Nancy was an extraordinarily compassionate woman, with a vivacious personality. She was truly one of the brightest and most perceptive women, I've had the privilege to know. I will always treasure the many great conversations, along with the laughter that followed, we had shared.

Dear Jack and Jennifer, you are both in my loving thoughts and prayers.

With Heartfelt Sympathy,

We met at IBM and although we went through periods of little contact, the band always got back together. Nancy was like a sister to me and I to her. I hope to see her once again. I hope that while she looks over Jack and Jennifer from above, she looks down on me from time to time to give me some meager portion of the overwhelming strength she took with her.

I will always miss her, but my tears of sadness will eventually give way to a smile and a memory of some time we shared together.

Nancy Caplan was one of my best friends. We have been friends for over 25 years and, although I am that many years older then she, I found myself always learning from her. She was an incredible life force, full of love, life and enthusiasm. Nancy always had the best ideas, the best plans, the best solutions to a problem . She could always find the most unique and unexpected aspects to be found on any subject. She was a brilliant woman with a mind like a steel trap. She never forgot anything she had ever learned or noticed. She was an extremely successful businesswoman and she was also a faithful friend. She loved having fun and it is hard to try to picture her when she didn't have a smile on her face and a giggle in her voice.

Nancy was a wonderful mother. I never knew another woman who could even imagine, much less organize, plan and execute the birthday parties, sleep-overs, limousine delivered concert visits and so many other treats that Nancy planned for Jennifer and her friends. Nancy made sure that Jennifer's life was , and would always be, full of all things good and happy.

Nancy and John shared a circle of friends with my late husband and me. We socialized often, throughout the years: we travelled together and shared many of life's dear and special moments together. Nancy was the youngest of the group but, by far, the most vibrant and important force of our group. Her death leaves a hole in my heart. I loved her and I will never forget her.

Nancy was my Aunt. She was the youngest sibling in her family. I always felt like I could relate to her based on a shared experience of being the babies of our families. It was always wonderful to see her for family functions growing up because she was upbeat and full of energy. She thought that I looked great in red, so every year, she gave me a red sweater from the Limited for Christmas. It kind of became a running joke. She was so much fun like that.

I looked up to her as a business savvy and dynamic woman as the MBA of the family, climbing the echelons of IBM. She also was an avid traveler. Before boarding my first airplane ride as a child, I told her how scared I was to die in a plane crash. She said something that stuck with me. She said, If you are afraid to live, you are just waiting to die. Nancy certainly lived. She was not afraid to dig in and enjoy life.

Not only that, but she did it with flair, enthusiasm and kindness. Over the past ten months, I became closer to Aunt Nancy in the wake of my own mothers (her sisters) death. I told her daughter, Jen that her kindness and care completely astounded me. I was touched every time that she popped into my life because I knew she was looking after me. I am grateful for the gift of having such a special Aunt in my life and I will keep her safely tucked away in my heart. I pray for Jennifer and Jack to have peace through this most difficult time. Love you.

Nancy was absolutely one of the kindest, most generous, thoughtful people I've ever known. I can't remember a time, when chatting with her, that I didn't walk away with a smile on my face. I will miss her friendship, and I'll miss her kindness to our pets, and - of course - her baking. What a special woman Nancy was. I consider myself lucky to have shared so many spontaneous moments across our fence together. Much love to Jack and Jennifer.
