Richard EDWARDS Obituary

EDWARDS, Dr. Richard C. (Captain, USN retired) died November 28, 2023 in Clearwater, FL. He was born December 5, 1932 in Beech Bottom, WV to Guy and Edith (Cunliffe) Edwards. He had a BS degree from Bethany College, a DDS from University of Pittsburgh, and became a Diplomat of the American Board of Periodontology following training at University of California, San Francisco. He had many tours of duty in his Naval career beginning at NAS Jax, USS Independence CVA-62, perio training at Bethesda, MD and UCSF, CA followed by duty at Yokosuka, Japan, USNA at Annapolis to retiring in 1979 as the XO of 2nd Dental Co FMF from Camp LeJeune, NC. He was predeceased by his parents and his first wife, Nancy (Wells) of 43 years and mother to their four surviving children: Dr. Richard W. (Lynne) Edwards of Hershey, PA, David G. (Jacque) Edwards of St. Petersburg, FL, Suzanne E. (Michael) Patrick of Palm Harbor, FL and Thomas V. (Dawn) Edwards of Davenport, IA. He is also survived by his brother, Dr. David G. (Linda) Edwards of Wellsburg, WV, four grandchildren; and his current wife, Mary Ann, and her children, Frank Calvin (Chris) Lewis and Harold Flanigan (Tammy) Lewis, and their children and grandchildren. After retiring from the Navy he practiced as a Periodontist at various locations in the Tampa Bay Area, retiring in 2007. He was an Eagle Scout, a member of Beta Theta Pi, Psi Omega, various professional societies, a Master Mason, a Shriner and Life Member of the MOAA. Per his wishes, he will be interred at Bay Pines National Cemetery. National Cremation Society.
