Richard Watson Obituary

Lisbon - Richard James Watson Jr. passed away Feb. 6, 2026. He was born Aug. 26, 1944, in Little Rock, Ark. He was the beloved son of the late Richard and Ruth (McNaught) Watson and was predeceased by his sister, Sharon Sanquedolce.

Richard graduated from Norwich Free Academy with the Class of 1962. In November of that same year, he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps. He proudly served four years on active duty, including one and a half years fighting in the Vietnam War. During his service, Richard was promoted to Sergeant and worked as a radar technician. He was honorably discharged in October 1966, and was awarded the Good Conduct Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal and the National Defense Service Medal.

Upon Richard's return from serving his country, he worked for a few years at Kaman Aircraft before becoming a tow motor operator at Federal Paper Board and retired from there after 38 years.

A devoted sports fan, Richard cheered passionately for the Boston Red Sox, the Green Bay Packers, and NASCAR - especially Dale Earnhardt Sr., and later Dale Earnhardt Jr. Above all, he loved watching his grandchildren compete in their sporting events. He was a proud member of VFW Post 594 in Norwich.

Richard was well known for his playful sense of humor. He delighted in teasing family and friends and had a talent for giving everyone a funny nickname -something that will be fondly remembered by all who knew him.

He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Nancy; his son, Greg Watson and his wife, Marisa (Lembo) Watson, of Bridgewater, N.J.; his daughter, Laurie McBride and her husband, John Lanza, of Mystic; and his six cherished grandchildren: Makayla, Michael, Nicholas, Victoria, Mark and Daniel. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.

Calling hours will be held from 9 to 11 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 12, immediately followed by a funeral home service with military honors at Labenski Funeral Home, 107 Boswell Avenue, Norwich.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Richard's memory to: Wounded Warrior Project, P.O. Box 758517, Topeka, KS 66675-8517 and/or Disabled American Veterans, P.O. Box 14301, Cincinnati, OH 45250-0301.

The family would like to thank the Lisbon Fire Department, as well as the medical staff at the William W. Backus Hospital.

To the Watson family,
I am saddened to hear of Ricks' passing. I had the pleasure of working with Rick at Federal Paper Board. He always had good insight and appreciation to complete the job at hand with the highest of standards, providing support to fellow workers while utilizing his great sense of humor. God bless you, Rick, may you rest in peace in the arms of our Lord.
