Memories and Condolences
for ROBERT WILKINS

Not sure what to say?

To the family of Robert (Bob) Wilkins I offer my deepest sympathies. Bob Wilkins was my instructor, clinical coordinator and mentor back in 1980-1981 when I was a respiratory therapy student at LLU. He leaves very unforgettable memories of my youth. He was our companion at Palm Springs Hospital on Thurdays when I had my clinical rotation there, and they had BBQ ribs.
He was an excellent source of advice not only academically, but professionally as well. I was so very happy when he started publishing his books, because I always took pride of being one of his students and he had much knowledge to share.
I last saw Dr. Wilkins at the AARC convention in Anaheim, California in 2008. He never lost his sense of humor. When we saw each other after nearly 30 years, he told me that I've gained great knowledge (as well as a "few" extra pounds) through the years.
I have become an educator, just as he was.
Instructors like Bob Wilkins, Howard Sanders, Bud Spearman,Timothy Henion, and Dr. Ralph Peters inspired me to become who I am today.
He will never be forgotten, his legacy is immense, and I always make sure I pass on his many advices to my students, who I always tell that a man like Dr. Robert (Bob) Wilkins is and will be a man very hard to match.
May he rest in peace. Amen
This is Walter Humberto Garcia (LLU Respiratory Therapy Class of 1981)

Mr. Wilkins was always pleasant and kind. His mannerisms were humble, but his contributions to his friends, collegues, and students were monumental. He left a legacy. God bless his family and friends. He blessed us.

Hi Ruby,

Bobby was a delight to have around. His sense of humor and unique slant on life always had us thinking/laughing.

He loved sports-we played on the basketball/softball/football teams at SVA as comrades, beating the upper classes on a regular basis in our sophomore year to their chagrin many times.

Mrs. Dalton didn't appreciate Bobby's sense of humor as much as the rest of us did, and kicked him out of class a time or two, to our delight.

What great memories we/I will always have of Bobby!

I'm deeply sorry for your loss Ruby-no one should ever have to go thru the pain of outliving their child... But I'm confident that we'll all see Bobby again in the New Kingdom.

You did a wonderful job raising your kids on your own-you should be proud.

Love,

Tedd French

Dear Kris, Nick and Tyler. Bobby and I were about as close as A nephew and uncle can be and still be 3000 miles apart. I'm just so honored to be his uncle. Kris I'll never forget the hospitality you and Bobby showed Kay and I when we visited you in California a few years ago. Tyler and Nick ,I wish to maintain a relationship with you as your Dad and I had. This has left a void in my life that only you can help to fill. Uncle Donnie

Bob... you will be greatly missed by many, here at Loma Linda University. You have left a great legacy in the form of leadership, organization and scholarship. The latter - scholarship - was an incredible strength you shared with both colleagues and students. We all revelled in the pride of having the senior author of Egan's as one of our very own. Thanks for all you've done to leave us this legacy.

September 17, 2010

Our family along with students, faculty and alumni of Loma Linda University in Saudi Arabia, extend our heartfelt sympathy to Kris, Tyler and Nick. Bob was my clinical instructor 1979-80 and later in life was my chairman. His mentoring went a long way in preparing me for my career. Two years ago I had a chance to complement him on his global publications and he surprised me by saying his 1st publication was 2nd author to a student by the name of Richard Nelson. That was Bob, encouraging others to achieve. That spirit continues with those he trained. Next week with the start of classes our students will be carrying Bob's textbooks in their backpacks … his legacy continues. Our son Billy still has the baseball Bob tossed to him before he left for Texas. We look forward to seeing Bob again. Richard Nelson, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia

Bob was such a true gentleman and wonderful colleague. All of us at the School of Health Professions in the UT Health Science Center at San Antonio cherished the time that Bob and Kristi spent with us and continued to appreciate his contributions to the students and Respiratory Care after they returned to CA. As his Chair colleague, I especially appreciated his practical approach, his wisdom, and sense of humor during tough times. He is an inspiration to us all in the way he handled his life and his death. My sincerest thoughts and prayers are with Kristi and the family as they remember Bob and move forward with their lives the way he would have wanted. May you rest in peace--I am blessed to have known you!

“Strange is our situation here upon earth. Each of us comes for a short visit, not knowing why, yet sometimes seeming to a divine purpose. From the standpoint of daily life, however, there is one thing we do know: That we are here for the sake of others...for the countless unknown souls with whose fate we are connected by a bond of sympathy. Many times a day, I realize how much my outer and inner life is built upon the labors of people, both living and dead, and how earnestly I must exert myself in order to give in return as much as I have received.” Quote by Albert Einstein.
As Bob hired me as the secretary to the Dept. of CPS he touched my life just as he did many other countless souls. Much heartfelt sympathy and respect goes out to Bob's and his family.

September 15, 2010

Dr. Robert Wilkins succeeded me as Chair of the Respiratory Care program at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio. Prior to that I taught respiratory care students for many years using Bob's patient assessment textbook. We always referred to our textbook simply as "Wilkins" so when I finally met him and got to know him personally, it was like a legend had come to life for me. I extend my deepest sympathy to Bob's wife and family members. He will be sorely missed.

Kris, Tyler and Nick,

Our thoughts and prayers are with you. Bob will always be remembered by us as a teacher, author and colleague, but most of all as the proudest father that two sons could have.

I will always remember Bob as a competitor, particularly in sports. It was a joy to play softball with Bob, and he always enjoyed when the faculty team at LLU put the "beat down" on the various student teams...

May God bless you during this difficult time...
