Sam Hawkins Obituary

Sam Wilson Hawkins was born to Doyle A. Hawkins and Thelma Wilson on 13 July 1933 in Kirbyville, Texas. He died on July 27, 2013 at 10:40 p.m.

Hawkins attended the Kirbyville schools and graduated in 1950. He was a graduate of the University of Texas and Harvard University. He spent a life time career in public education, teaching in the public schools and San Jacinto College for 40 years. Hawkins considered himself as first, foremost and always a teacher. He was more at home in front of a class than anywhere else. He retired in 1994 after being named a Minnie Stevens Piper Professor the highest honor in Texas Higher Education.

Hawkins loved and served this country but never wore his patriotism on his sleeve nor made a big issue of it. This was demonstrated in his service from 1955 to 1957 in the Third Armored Division, the first division to penetrate Germany in World War II, as it was reactivated to return to Germany. He often grieved over policy decisions made by the leaders of this country and hoped they would be corrected but lived by the philosophy: My country, right or wrong, my country.

He was active in the community affairs serving in various capacities. Among which were Pasadena ISD Board of Trustees, College Committees, Pasadena Charter Revision Commission, Huntsville Friends of the Library Pasadena and Huntsville, Retired Teachers Association, PARSE, Democratic Party, and First United Methodist Church of Pasadena.

Hawkins was fiercely loyal to his friends and colleagues. He was often quoted as saying: "If friends and family were a measure of wealth then I am the richest person in the world."

There were two groups that Hawkins had great fondness for: First, the 1950 graduating class of Kirbyville High School, Second, the 1961 graduating class of Deer Park High School. He often talked about both classes with much affection.

Predeceased by his parents, Hawkins is survived by his devoted wife of 52 years, Patricia Ann, son, Malcolm Hawkins and children Jack and Anna, daughter Melissa Pierce and husband Larry and children, Coleman, Samantha, Taylor and Tyler, a sister, Ann Propst and husband Bob and family; a brother, Doyle and wife Kathleen and families, and brother-in-law Randal Chance, aunt, Billie Nowlin, five nieces and three nephews and numerous cousins.

In addition to the family, Hawkins is survived by a host of friends, his greatest treasure, and hundreds of former students in which he had the deepest affection and pride.

Visitation will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. on Thursday, August 1, 2013 at Grand View Funeral Home, 8501 Spencer Hwy, Pasadena, TX 77505. Funeral Services will be held on Friday, August 2, 2013 at 3:00 p.m. at First United Methodist Church of Pasadena, 1062 Fairmont Pkwy, Pasadena, TX 77505, Rev. Kelly Sullivan will be officiating. Burial and graveside services will be held on Saturday, August 3, 2013 at 2:00 p.m. at Kirbyville Cemetery, Kirbyville, Texas.

In lieu of the usual floral remembrances, Hawkins suggested a more lasting memorial - a donation to your favorite library - church, school, public - in his memory or by taking a teacher to lunch and telling him/her how much they are appreciated. A book is like a friend which can be shared and enjoyed by many and are permanent. An alternative suggestion is The Smile Train, P.O. Box 9121, Washington, D.C. 20090-6211. As a member of the 1961 Deer Park class I have very fond memories of Mr. Hawkins. He brought in exotic foods for us to try. I had fried bees, candy ants, rattlesnake and many others. Sam also taught me history in college after my time in the Navy. I asked him one day why this history course was so easy, He said we were using the same book we had used in High school. He was a wonderful friend and will always be remembered.

Dear Hawkins Family- Please accept my most sincere and heartfelt condolences. Mr. Hawkins was absolutely my favorite professor at San Jac. He brought life to each Government class, not only through his wisdom, years of experience and keen sense of politics, but through his passion and humor. Mostly, I want you to know that, as with hundreds if not thousands, he was a very significant mentor and an inspiration to me, who knew and cared for me, as an individual, at a very pivotal point in my life. May your fondest memories always be close, and may the Lord give you comfort through knowing that your beloved made a lasting and positive impact on countless numbers of young (and no longer young) people who now lift you up in prayer. With my most sincere sympathy and prayers, I remain always, respectfully, Randall L. Fluke, A Former Student San Jacinto College, Class of 1979

Professor Hawkins was my favorite (and best!) college professor. He was an excellent PISD school board member, and most of all, I am proud to have considered him my friend. Whether I was his student or his grandchildren's teacher, he demonstrated compassion, care and love in all that he did. My prayers are with the family in their time of loss.

Professor Hawkins was an Government Instuctor of mine back in 1988 prior to entering the SJC Nursing Program, & he was a Delight, & Joy, to have as an Instuctor. His heart was in this, it seems. He had always presented an "Outstanding" Lecture, that would Interest & Motivate his students(He was impressionable in his method of Instruction), & surely, one of those people that students will not forget, as they go forward in their Education. I enjoyed Government as as Course, but he had made this an exceptional Course, for even the average individual. Maureen L. Walker R.N.

Ann,
I don't know if you remember me but Sam and I were good friends when my family lived in LaPorte. We had some fierce racquetball games and great conversations. I considered him a mentor as well as a friend. I lost touch after moving to Tyler but I thought of you both often. My most vivid memories were when he had the tumor behind his nose and they did surgery and he told me they just moved his nose over and scooped it out with a tablespoon. What a great sense of humor in very trying and uncertain times. I loved to get him riled up over politics. He was a great man and I know from conversations how much he loved his family. I hope God gives you comfort in the memories you have of Sam.

I moved here from Mississippi and was required to take Texas government to become certified to teach in Texas. The Farquhars recommended I take Mr. Hawkins' class. I have never regretted it! He always greeted me with a big smile and a personal word when we would run across each other at PISD events. He became a longtime friend. My heart is saddened at his passing.
May you feel the presence of His comforting arms wrapped around you as you face each day without him. He was such a fine man.

Our sincere condolences to the Hawkins family. Sam was a sweet, sweet man and wondreful teacher. I went to Rayburn with Malcolm and Melissa, and then had a class under Sam at San Jac. It was there that I learned of our Kirbyville connection. He really made the course enjoyable and was an inspiration to many. This is on behalf of the Dr. W.F. McCreight, Sr. and Joseph Whitehead families of Kirbyville, and the Patricks and McCreights of Pasadena

Two of my fondest memories of my Uncle were his rendition of "The Good Ship Lollipop" and his saying....(re:his students At SJAC) "If they weren't democrats when they came in my class, they would be when they left." I loved him because he was the keeper of the family history. If I had any questions on someone in our family, he knew the answer. He was such a wonderful man. I will miss him dearly.

Sam was my government teacher at San Jacinto College in the late 70s. We were political opposites but became fast friends. Sam's excellence in teaching was not only reserved for the classroom but the extended to racquetball as well. Nothing pleased him more than running a young nineteen year old around the court. I'll miss Sam…he was truly a first class friend.

May the peace of God that surpasses all understanding comfort his loving family during this time of loss.

Thanks Sam, for everything you did. Teachers and mentors live much longer than most of us by impacting the lives that follow. You made many, many people better every year over many years. Thanks.

Sam Hawkins was a role model, an encourager, a friend, a published writer, and a charismatic teacher who made his classes so interesting you actually looked forward to History. He inspired us to be our best. He openly loved and enjoyed us and we loved and admired him in return. We always invited him to our reunions and he attended as many as he could. He moved from being our teacher into being our dear friend and we will miss him. Karen Metcalf Key, Deer Park High School, Class of '61.

Mr. Hawkins was my favorite professor in college. I remember his knowledge of government and politics, his good sense of humor, and his admiration of Hubert Humphrey. In 1991 he helped me get an internship at the district office of Congressman Mike Andrews, and he wrote a letter of recommendation on my behalf to the University of Texas. I am thankful for what I learned in his classroom and the assistance he gave me in life. Sam Hawkins was a good man. My prayers are with his family and friends.

We were saddened to hear of Sam's death. Mom fondly remembers working with him on the Stylist, the KHS newsletter. I wasn't privileged to know him personally but remember his mother's pride of who he had become. Knowing that Sam must have followed his mother's footsteps in teaching excellence, I know that our educational system has lost a great friend and mentor.

May God wrap his arms around each of you and give you peace and great memories of Sam to light your faces with laughter.

Hawkins family, we are sad to hear of Sam's death. We enjoyed having him and his wife in our class in Huntsville for a while. God bless you all.

I was sorry to hear of Mr. Sam's passing. His mother, Thelma "Bitsy" Hawkins, was my 7th grade English teacher, and served as a major inspiration in my life. I was so glad that she got to see me graduate from law school, and learn that I taught fellow attorneys.

She was so proud of her children, and especially Mr. Sam's accomplishments in teaching.

My best to the family.

The obit brought back many memories. It says Sam fondly remembers the 1961 graduating class of Deer Park High School. And we certainly remember him. After 50 years at our class reunion his name was the one that kept coming up as we talked about the "good old days"of high school.

You are sorely missed Sam.
