Steven Schaeffer Obituary

Steven Geiger Schaeffer

Raleigh

Steven Geiger Schaeffer, 30, of Raleigh, NC passed away Friday, January 27, 2017. Steven was born in Atlanta, Georgia on February 24, 1986 to John Kenneth Schaeffer and Janie Geiger Schaeffer. Steven moved with his family to Raleigh in 1988. He attended Sanderson High School and graduated from North Raleigh Christian Academy. He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte in 2009. Steven was a member of the UNCC 49ers hockey team and served as team captain during his final two seasons. Steven was employed by StrataBuilt, LLC as a software quality assurance analyst.

In addition to his parents Janie and John, he is survived by his brothers Richard and Christopher; his paternal grandfather John Carlton Geiger; and many loved aunts, uncles and cousins. He also leaves behind the love of his life, Alley Meyer. He was preceded in death by his maternal grandmother Mary Geiger and his paternal grandparents James and Helen Schaeffer.

Steven was a loving son, brother, cousin, nephew, friend, teammate, referee and coach. His brilliant smile and engaging gaze made us all feel accepted and heard. He had a passion for everything from software applications to performance cars and science fiction literature. Steven had the gift of connection with everyone he knew. His pride and love for his mom, dad and brothers was ever apparent in the way that he protected them and boasted about their accomplishments. Those who loved him will find the world a lesser place without Steven in their lives.

A visitation will be held Friday, February 3, at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home, 1701 E. Millbrook Road, Raleigh from 6:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. Funeral service will be at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home on Saturday, February 4 at 11:00 a.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Raleigh Youth Hockey Association (P.O. Box 61400, Raleigh, NC 27661), where Steven learned invaluable life lessons and hockey skills.

Steven, we will miss your grand smile, but have fond memories of watching you rollerblade around the neighborhood, playing in the snow, and carefully mowing our lawn. You were loved and will be missed by all.

Hello Family,

I first met Steven when I started playing hockey for Charlotte. I was his Vice President while he was President of the club. I would like to start off by saying that I'm sorry to hear this very sad news and my prayers for you all. Steven was a joy to work with and we were blessed to have him as a teammate. His laugh and smile will truly be missed. Steven's family should be proud for raising such an amazing man. God Bless

Man, there are no words. Even though we'd lost touch over the last several years, we shared countless memories and great times throughout high school and college. You were a great friend and tremendously loyal to those who you cared about. I hate that we lost touch, I just always assumed that we would catch back up some day. My prayers go out to the Schaeffer family during this difficult time.

Steven,
I am so sad that you are gone and I never got a chance to visit with you again. Your handsome face always reminded me of your Dad's and our Grandpa's. Praying for your (our) family and hope to see you again someday.

Not really sure how to express my feelings. You have left this world too soon and you will certainly be missed. We were thick as thieves back in our day. I still remember how you introduced yourself to us in Chemistry class when you were new to NRCA. Steven Schaefer "The Specimen." I have more memories with you than I can count. Praying for the entire Schaeffer family.

Steven,
You are one of the kindest hearted souls I've ever know. I am deeply saddened to hear you at no longer with us. I cherish our walks around the neighborhood, our calls when you lived in Charlotte and our genuine friendship. You are one of those people who have the unique ability to make everyone comfortable, laugh and feel important. You never involved yourself in clicks, you were friends with everyone, and you made me feel heard. When my mom died, you spent time talking to me. I regret having such little contact with you over the past two or so years, but you are remembered in my heart. You left me way too soon, friend.

My condolences to Schaef's family and girlfriend. All of your co-workers are thinking about you today. - Ben
