Tommye Forkner Obituary



Tommye Ruth Forkner Tommye Ruth Forkner, 85, peacefully passed away on Wednesday, August 23, 2007, in Austin, Texas. She was born on November 19, 1921, in Austin, Tex., to Ruth Casey and Thomas Rankin. She attended Elgin High School (class of 1939) and graduated from Southwest Texas State Teachers' College in San Marcos. Tommye married the love of her life, Lee Forkner, a highly decorated Naval Aviator, on June 18, 1943. After many years of Navy life, they settled in San Diego with their son, Larry, and later moved back to Austin to be closer to family. Tommye and Lee had been married for 63 years until Lee's passing on April 8, 2006. A devoted wife, loving mother, and beloved aunt, grandmother, and great-grandmother, Tommye's life of tenderness, love, and class served as an example to all who were blessed to know her. She was a member of Manchaca United Methodist Church. Tommye will be deeply missed by her son Larry Forkner and wife Emma; grandson Robert Forkner and wife Stefanie; granddaughter Lauren Brodie, husband Matt, and great-granddaughter Mary Allison; grandson John Forkner; step- mother Kathleen Rankin; step- brother Jim Rankin and wife Lynda; nephews Scott and Greg Rankin; and countless other relatives and friends. The family will receive friends from 2:00pm to 3:00pm, Sunday, August 26, 2007 at Cook-Walden/ Forest Oaks Funeral Home. Funeral Services will be at 2:00 p.m., Monday, August 27, 2007, in the Chapel of Cook-Walden/Forest Oaks Funeral Home with Reverend Peter Castles officiating. Interment to follow services at Cook-Walden/Forest Oaks Memorial Park. For those desiring, contributions may be made in Tommye's memory to Manchaca United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 460, Manchaca, TX 78652, (512) 282- 7274.

I was sorry to hear of Tommie Ruth's passing. I spelled her given name as it appears on her birth announcement. The announcement was sent to my mother in Elgin by Tommye's parents, who were her friends. I will be glad to send you a copy of the envelope and announcement (will send the orignal if I can find it). My mother's name was Alma G Outlaw who was born and died in Elgin.
