Karl Plath Obituary
Marco Island, FL
Karl Richard Plath, age 90, entered enternal rest on Friday, January 19, 2018, with his loving wife of 60 years, Sandy, at his side.
Karl was born March 27, 1927 in Elgin, IL to Ernest K. Plath and Laura Baumgardt Plath. In addition to his wife, he is survived by two daughters, Laurie (Howard) Miller of Moseley, VA and Amy Anderson of Carol Stream, IL; four grandchildren, Alex (Brittany) and Andrew Miller, Brianna and Haley Anderson; and one great-grandson, Beau Miller. Karl was predeceased by his sister, Frances Strohm; and is survived by two brothers, David (Jacquie) Plath and Paul (Gretchen) Plath.
Karl attended Marquette University on a full football scholarship where he played quarterback for four years, graduating in 1948. He received his MA in 1954 and his EdD in 1960 from Columbia University, New York.
Karl had a love for children which led to a long and successful career in education as a coach, teacher, principal and superintendent. He ended his career as co-owner of an Educational Management firm.
Karl was an active member of Marco Lutheran Church. He served as President of the congregation, sang in the choir, and was Chairman of the Board of Lay Ministry.
Karl's greatest love was spending time with his family. He enjoyed playing sports with his grandchildren, as well as educating them both spiritually and fundamentally.
One of Karl's passions was playing tennis. He was able to play into his 80s. One of his greatest accomplishments was being ranked in the state of Florida in Men's doubles for 60s, 70s and 80s.
Karl was a gentle, kind, modest, positive, unassuming man who was a wonderful example of "the greatest generation." He never knew a stranger and always had a smile on his face.
A celebration of life will be held Saturday, February 3, 2018 at 1:30 p.m. at Marco Lutheran Church, 525 N. Collier Blvd., Marco Island, FL.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to The Marco Lutheran Church Memorial Fund or to Vitas Hospice.

Dear Sandy,
What wonderful memories I have of my 5 years working with Karl in District 113 and the times
Ellie and I spent with the two of you. Karl and I played many holes of golf - after office hours of course. I will always remember him as a highly intelligent, pragmatic, humble and strong administrator and as a kind, gentle, competitive, understanding and encouraging friend.
May God comfort you in your loss. I am sure you were a wonderful caregiver.
