Jane Elizabeth (Moberly) Poythress (96), died peacefully August 21, 2017, in her Santa Barbara, CA, home after a fall on August 9th. She had lived in Santa Barbara since 1975 with her husband Bryant Richardson Poythress, Jr., who predeceased her in 2002.
Jane was born July 28, 1921, in Washington, DC, where she graduated from Wilson Teachers College and was a member of Sigma Sigma Sigma sorority. She married Bryant in 1943, and they lived in six different states over 20 moves before retiring to Santa Barbara. She and Bryant enjoyed daily walks at Hendry's beach.
Jane was an exceptionally caring person, always showing more concern for others than for herself. In her younger days she volunteered as a "pink lady" at the local hospitals. She thoroughly enjoyed travel with her daughter, especially cruises and with the "Our Gang" group in Santa Barbara. Jane always "worked the room" and talked with everyone, with a twinkle in her eye. Her essays from a local writing class provide wonderful insight into her life. She had a witty sense of humor and said that she wants to be remembered as "a treasured antique."
Jane is survived by her son, Christopher Allan Poythress and his wife Betty (Castle) Poythress of South Windsor, CT; her daughter, Karen Poythress of Santa Barbara; her grandson, David Scott Poythress and his wife Nicole Marie (Fagan) Poythress and their daughter Ava Cynthia Poythress of Redding, CT; her granddaughter, Sarah Elizabeth Poythress of Colorado Springs, CO; and her sister, Margaret Moberly Murray of Manassas, VA, as well as several nieces and nephews.
