ALEXANDER W. SNOW 1943 - 2016
Antrim, NH. - Alexander "Sandy" W. Snow, 73 of Antrim New Hampshire passed away peacefully, with family by his side, on Friday, September 30, 2016 at Concord, New Hampshire Hospice House after a brief illness.
He was predeceased by his wife of 35 years, Carol J. Snow.
He is survived by his three brothers, Stratton J. Snow, of Waterford; Thomas K. Snow and his wife Jeanne, of Niantic; Steven D. Snow and his wife Denise of Willington. His stepsons and stepdaughters, Michael Havenen and his wife Kelly, of Arizona; Debbie Avery and her husband Dale, of Ellington; Kim Havenen of Brooklyn; Dale Havenen and his wife Jill, of Windsor, NH. Also many nieces, nephew, grandchildren and several great grandchildren.Besides his wife, Carol, he was predeceased by his parents John and Ruth Snow and his sister Cynthia A.Wilson.
Sandy was born on April 6, 1943 in Port Washington, NY to John and Ruth Snow. He grew up in New London and graduate from New London High School. He continued on to University of Vermont, Mitchell College, and then the University of Connecticut to earn his Associate and Bachelor degrees. Later on in life he earned his Master degree through the University of New Haven. Sandy had a long career in journalism, starting as a reporter at The New London Day then moving to The Norwich Bullietin and the Groton News in editorial positions. At the Bulletin, Sandy had a long career in journalism, co-editorial writer and edited the Sunday Courier section. He moved on to Electric Boat where he was an Technical Writer and then changed his professional career to software engineering. He then went to work at The Hartford as a Data Base Administrator before retiring in 2001.
When Sandy married Carol in December, 1981 they lived in East Haddam. When he retired they bought landed in Antrim, New Hampshire and built their dream retirement home along a trout stream.
They both enjoyed cruising and went to many places including: Alaska, the Caribbean, South America, Panama Canal, Europe, Mediterranean, Baltic and Russia. On one of their cruises they received an award and had dinner with the captain for the passenger with the most cruises (24) on that cruise with Celebrity Cruise Line.
Sandy was very active in Antrim's First Presbyterian Church where he was an Elder, wrote many article and stories for the monthly church newsletter, worked at the Senior Center and also was active in the Antrim town Zoning Board. He was very well known and liked in Antrim.
Sandy was an avid trout fisherman who fished rivers in Connecticut, Vermont, New York, and took many fishing trips out west to Wyoming, Idaho, and Montana with this father and brothers. He was also the president of the Thames Valley Chapter of Trout Unlimited. He had a real talent for wood carving, a passion for classical music, opera, astronomy, building telescopes, and writing stories for magazines as well as being a member of MENSA.
He will be sadly missed by his family, friends, and church member that knew him.
Services will be held in Antrim New Hampshire, Saturday October 8, 2016.
