At the age of 25, he was named President and CEO of Jonathan Logan, Inc., becoming the youngest president of any business on the New York Stock Exchange. He provided steadfast leadership as a member, Executive Director, and Chair of the New York State Council on the Arts. At Cornell, Dick was a strong proponent of the visual and performing arts, serving as Chair of the Herbert F. Johnson Museum of Art Advisory Council and endowing the museum's Richard J. He also left an indelible mark on the College of Arts and Sciences, serving as a member of its Advisory Council, endowing the Richard J. Schwartz Professorship of Government, and funding the renovation of an auditorium in Rockefeller Hall, which is named in recognition of his philanthropy. At Weill Cornell Medicine, his generosity created the Sheila W. and Richard J. Schwartz Interdisciplinary Oncology Research Program. We express our deepest condolences to Dick's beloved wife Sheila, Jenny and John, and the entire Schwartz family. Robert S. Harrison Chairman of the Board of Trustees, Cornell University Hunter R. I had the honor to work for David Schwartz and Richard Schwartz as their resident Showroom Model in the 1411 Broadway building. I look back fondly on my days with Logan as my happiest days...such a wonderful family.

I worked closely with Dick during my last few years at the Arts Council. I came to appreciate his generosity, not only financially, but also in giving of his time, experience, and counsel. I know that, even though New York's arts community will miss him, we will also long remember all he has done.

With my sincerest condolences to the family, Jack Lindahl

I, and all of us at Poets House, mourn the loss of our dear friend and champion, Richard Schwartz. As Chairman of The New York State Council of the Arts under the Pataki administration, Dick furthered Poets House's quest to find a sustainable home by opening his rolodex year after year, suggesting possible developers and projects that we might be part of. Dick was a generous confidante and advisor who helped us, feeding us suggestions for the future until we found the one that worked.

Recently, in the joy of seeing our space fully animated with people and programs, Dick made a personal donation to what he dubbed "The Poets House Opportunity Fund," leading the way once again. We loved him, we love him. And hundreds of thousands of people who have visited this home for poetry have enjoyed the art of the possible that Dick fostered.

One of the nicest people I have ever met. Always wonderful to me. What a full life and so many good things. Will very much miss seeing him at CCC. What a gentleman!

Dear Sheila, Lois, John and Jenny,

We mourn the loss of our long time partner and one of my mentors. He always set the bar high and supported our effort to keep it there. I'll never forget how intimidated I was when Dick was kind enough to meet with me as I started my business career. Sure enough, he counseled me and gave me the confidence to ht the ground running. Dick will be missed. At the same, like his father before him, he's passed the torch into capable hands. The Bermant Family passes along its respects, gratitude and well wishes to the Schwartz family.

Dearest Sheila,
Dick was an extraordinary man and amazing leader in the cultural field as Chair of the New York State Council on the Arts. I was fortunate to serve during his tenure. He understood and enjoyed the arts profoundly, and had the business and political savvy to help the field flourish in New York City and State as never before. You were his ideal partner. I send you and your family my love and profound sadness at your loss. Susana Torruella Leval

Thanks to Dick, I made my first trip to Europe in 1960 with him. During our 10 week odyssey, in a Citroen sedan I came to appreciate his intellect, organizational skills, and driving ability. These attributes served him well both in his business career and his pursuits in the arts. I will miss him, but will always remember our adventures when both we and the world were younger.

He was my favorite! So many wonderful times together everywhere. Love and hugs to you all from Gretchen and me.
