Gerard D. Buter, 74, fondly known to his loved ones as "Gerry" passed away far too soon on May 31, 2024 surrounded by the love of his family. He was a long time resident of Putnam Valley, NY.
Gerry was born on March 28, 1950, in NYC, to the late Xander and Grace (Macho) Buter.
After graduating Hackley School, Gerry's passion for learning led him to the C. W. Post Campus at Long Island University. His love for animals and dedication to conservation emerged into a fulfilling career as the Director of Operations at the renowned Bronx Zoo. Gerry's commitment and tireless work played a significant part in the zoo's success, and colleagues and zoo-goers alike will cherish his legacy there.
He married the love of his life and soul mate, Karen (Budnar) on April 30, 1983 in the picturesque town of Pleasantville, NY together they had 2 wonderful children, Nicole and Ryan.
Gerry's bright spirit and warm smile leaves a hole in the hearts of everyone he encountered. Gerry was a cherished husband, father, grandfather, brother, and uncle.
Survived by his beloved wife of 41 years Karen Buter, loving daughter, Nicole Taylor and her husband Henry and loving son, Ryan Buter and his wife Janica, along with his four treasured grandchildren, Aiden, Grace, Aria and Madison who will miss their Pop-Pop.
Gerry also leaves behind his dear sister, Alexa Buter, and nieces and nephews, Bliss Buter-Thompson, David Calloway, Shannon Maloney, and Brian Budnar, who will fondly remember his kind and thoughtful presence in their lives. His wisdom, laughter, and gentle guidance will be profoundly missed by all.
His family was his pride and joy, and he devoted himself to creating countless happy memories with them.
An avid nature enthusiast, Gerry's heart belonged to the great outdoors and all its glories. Whether he was hunting, fishing, gardening or simply riding his Harley in his younger days.
Gerry was happiest embraced by nature's beauty he found great peace in the outdoors, with animals, like hummingbirds visiting while he was tending to his garden of endless flower pots. His garden was a mirror of who he was – colorful, and full of life.
Gerard "Gerry" Buter's legacy is one of love, passion for nature, and commitment to the well-being of both animals and family will resonate long after his passing. His spirit will continue to inspire us as we look toward the natural world he so deeply cherished. Gerry's journey on earth may have ended, but his story will continue in the lives he touched.
Visitation will be held from 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, June 5, 2024 at Cargain Funeral Homes, Inc., 10 Fowler Avenue, Carmel, NY.

"Little Gerry," as we called him, was my little cousin. He was a sweet, gentle, rather quiet and thoughtful as a boy, who was modest about his talents, accomplishments and sterling character. As children we lived close enough that we enjoyed frequent visits, often involving animals, nature and model airplanes. As adults we were geographically distant, but it was always a pleasure to see him and his charming wife, Karen. The last time I saw him, he reminded me that when we were kids, I had given him a set of wheels with which he built a soap box racing car that he competed with and of how grateful he was for that gift. I did not remember the doing so, but he did, and I was touched that he remembered and made a point of telling me how important it was to him at the time. It made me feel good about myself, and I suspect he did so with many in his life.
The earth is not a good a place with him walking on it.
Love and condolences to all his family and loved ones,
Cousin, Rick Michael

"Little Gerry," as we called him was my little cousin. He was very sweet and modest about his talents, accomplishments and sterling character. We all (grandchildren of our Dutch musician grandparents "Oma and Opa" Little Gerry. Although we lived near enough in our childhood to visit frequently, In later years because we were geographically different, unfortunately saw each other rarely. The last time I saw him he reminded me that I had given him a set of wheels that he built a soap box derby racing car with, and how appreciative and grateful he was for that gift. I had no recollection of that, but felt touched that he remembered and was kind enough to tell me after all those years. Made me feel good about myself. I suspect he did that for a lot of people in his life. I wi
