Marjorie Toner Obituary

TONER, Marjorie McAllister of Palm Beach, Florida, born on June 26, 1926 in Brooklyn, New York, died on January 6, 2018 at Hospice, Good Samaritan Hospital, in the loving presence of her husband and as many of her extended family as possible. Marjorie was the second of Anthony and Marjorie McAllister's eight children. She attended Bishop McDonnell High School, received a degree in Mathematics from the College of New Rochelle ('48), and obtained a Master's Degree at Brooklyn College in Early Childhood Education. Marjorie enjoyed being a Kindergarten teacher at various New York City schools, and worked her way up to Supervisor, Assistant Director, then Director of the Bureau of Early Childhood for the Board of Education of the City of New York. During her term in that office, she instituted and implemented the Head Start, Follow Through, All Day Kindergarten, and Pre-K through Grade Two Programs, retiring in 1989. Marjorie was predeceased by her sister Eileen and brothers Anthony, Jr. and Donal. She is survived by her wonderful first boyfriend and treasured husband (married at age 74), John (Jack) Toner, by Jack's daughter Ann Gervase (Richard) and Ann's children. She is also survived by numerous adoring members of the McAllister family, including her sister Patrice, and brothers Brian (Rosemary), Bruce (Rebecca) and Michael (Patricia). She raised a village (her 5 younger brothers were her first class, and each frequently quoted the popular title "All I Really Need to Know, I Learned in Kindergarten"). She was a guiding light to 26 beloved nieces and nephews, all knowing they were her favorite. She created unique and treasured memories. Her ever widening circle of cousins and in-laws came to regard her as the heart and soul of our family. Many good friends have felt Marjorie's steadfast love, kindness and good humor, ever accompanied by firm common sense. Marjorie always assumed we were better than we might believe ourselves to be, and thereby elevated us all. Her life's body of work was us, and we are grateful. The wake will be from 4-6 PM on Wednesday, Jan. 10, 2018 at QUATTLEBAUM FUNERAL, CREMATION &EVENT CENTER, 5411 Okeechobee Blvd., West Palm Beach, FL, 33417. The Funeral Mass will be at St. Edward's Church, Palm Beach at 11AM, ON Thursday, Jan.11,2018 . In lieu of flowers, Marjorie's favorites were The College of New Rochelle and Hope House Ministries, Port Jefferson, N.Y.

My Thoughts on Marjorie McAllister- Toner

Thankful that she was responsible for the introduction of our parents, her significance in our lives is undeniable and major.
Her work with us now will be passed to the future generations of McAllister's.
Being an educator was not something she did , it was who she was. As a child , having her as a resource for life was an incredible gift.
Her intelligence, benevolence, devotion to God and family was her hallmark. . Her sense of fun and learning made her a much beloved, fabulous role model .
Her time and attention was given without hesitation.

She was inextricably interwoven into our lives, especially our summers in Belle Terre. Sailing or on the Beach, playing with us all as the family's came thru the Crystal Palace..She was a fixture in summer
Whether she was whisking us away for the day to museums and events, or helping her mother with the yearly party for Mary to be crowned and all the other party's she threw /contributed to .
Tough job corralling all those kids, but it was her specialty . She really enjoyed her role as Aunt. A badge of Honor
Just like her mother, she loved all her siblings children as if her own. Additionally, instilled in her by her mother, she he made sure to pass on her devotion to Mary to us all.
Especially, those tea sandwiches and lemonade were a bonus. Remembering those days warms my heart and feeds my soul. Thinking of all my cousins and family around, summers couldn't be finer..
She loved her traditions and passed them along with mastery.

A serious woman with a great heart and big free laugh. She was a major presence and always like her mother, made you feel special.
God Mothering and Aunting were serious business for Aunt Marj. She filled the role and broke the mold.
From lunches, ice cream and libraries, needlepoint projects, day trips to great museums and events, exciting and inspiring conversations, she did it all.
Quintessential, Amazing Aunt. She attended everyone's graduations and ceremony's of importance because it was important to her to be there for us.
She counseled and advised, corrected where need, always praised with love and care.
Oranges for Christmas and fabulous Birthday gifts, she always remembered. Whether a God child ( she has many) or one of her many nieces and nephews,
or to a neighbor or friends child..... we were all cherished by her .

Watching her skillfully care for her parents and siblings over the years, revealed her love and devotion to them and Soldier of Mercy to those in need that she knew of.
Her life may not have included her own children but she had more children than most that she directly impacted. She had her own " No child left behind program"
All were welcome in her heart. She was a world class woman who meant the world to me . Her legacy is the feeling of love she has left in our hearts.
Exceptional woman who lead an awesome life. Loved openly and compassionately. A major spirit and source of love that will be miss by all.
She was one of a kind and a cut above.
Rest in Peace Marjorie, Love

A wise and kind woman. Always with lively conversation, I so enjoyed being in her presence but too few times lately. I will always think fondly of her. My thoughts and prayers to all my McAllister cousins

Everytime I met Marj, she always gave me a big hello, followed by an engaging chat. I was not one of her 26 nieces and nephews, I was one of her sister's 40+. But I always felt the same warm and welcoming feeling you get when you're in the presence of a wonderful aunt. My condolences to your family. God bless you and the life you led, Marj. The party just got a little bigger in heaven.

My mother, Irene Murphy Gilles, was a college friend of Marge McAllister. We grew up hearing wonderful stories of the fun they had together. When I was in my mid-twenties, struggling to find a new job and find my path in life, my mother sent me to New York to spend a weekend with Marge at her lovely Park Avenue apartment with views of the Chrysler Building. I will never forget her kindness and good counsel. She treated me to a snazzy (and interesting!) lunch somewhere special and took me to all the best stores to pick out a professional wardrobe that would boost my confidence going into the interviews that lay ahead. (She's the one who figured out that I CAN wear red, it just needs to be the right shade!). She was funny and wise and showed by her own example what a successful working woman was. I can't claim to know her well, but she made an impression on me that I'll never forget! As my Mom said, this is the end of an era.

I was lucky enough to be one of her 26 nieces and nephews as well as a godson. She was always ready to make chocolate chip cookies (starting my current addiction but nothing ever taste as good as the ones from 1510) and take me and my brothers to Coney Island for a ride of my choosing including somehow getting a way too young boy to drive her around in a bumper car.
