Jack Rugh Obituary

RUGH -Jack Leighton Rugh passed away on August 2, 2002 in his sleep from complications of old age. He was born on Sept. 26, 1911 to Harry and Minnie (Mumma) Rugh, and grew up in Monterey Park, California. Jack was an outstanding athlete and student body president at Alhambra High School (class of 1930). In 2001 he was inducted into the AHS Baseball Hall of Fame. He remained a Dodgers fan all his life, and rarely missed a broadcast. Jack completed B.A (1936) and M.A. (1940) degrees in sociology at Ohio State University, where he lettered in track. He remained a loyal alumnus, frequently attending the Rose Bowl when his alma mater was in the tournament. He passed away with his OSU blanket over his bed covers. Jack met his beloved wife Elizabeth Sixt (1911-1999) at OSU and they were married in Alhambra on March 25 1944. Blinded in one eye by a football accident in high school, "One-Eyed Jack" was a tireless advocate for the employment of the disabled, especially veterans of World War II. He served many years on the President's Committee for Employment of the Handicapped. He is the author of several books and pamphlets on labor history, notably Labor Relations, World War II: Before, During and After. Jack was a leading citizen in the San Gabriel Valley community, well-known for his regular letters to the editor. He will be remembered as a jovia l friend, loving father and grandfather, and an avid organic gardener. Jack is survived by three children: Barbara (Mrs. John Robeson), Thomas (Susan) Rugh, and Jacqueline (Mrs. Michael Farewell), and by five grandsons: Daniel Robeson, Jeffrey Rugh, Jacob Rugh, Peter Rugh, and Nicholas Farewell. He is preceded in death by his wife Elizabeth and by his only brother, Harry V. Rugh, who died in 1929. Services will be held Wednesday, August 14 at 11:00 a.m. at Chapel of Remembrance Funeral Home, 500 South Fir st Avenue, Arcadia. The family invites friends to visit the Funeral Home in the hour preceding the service.
