Virginia Beach - George Earl Whitley passed away peacefully on June 2, 2012 surrounded by his family. He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Irene Painter Whitley and is survived by his daughters, Laura Whitley Hale of Leesburg, VA, Patsy Duncan Fentress of Virginia Beach and a son, James L. Duncan of Richmond, VA. He is also survived by 6 grandchildren, 8 great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. George grew up in Portsmouth, VA, son of Chloe Dozier Whitley and Elisha Whitley, Jr. There were 12 children in the family and George is survived by one remaining brother, Herbert Whitley of Portsmouth, VA. After serving in WWII, George resided in Norfolk and eventually moved to Virginia Beach in 1952. Over the years, he served in many capacities at First Presbyterian Church; he was a member of the Masonic Lodge #274, member of the Norfolk Scottish Rites, member of the Virginia Beach Kiwanis, past commander of Princess Anne American Legion Post #113, counselor for 30 years with American Legion Boys State program, retiree of Landmark Communications and a lifetime member of the Princess Anne Legion Post #113. The family will be receiving visitors at H D Oliver Funeral Apts., Laskin Road Chapel in VA Beach on Wed June 6, 2012 from 6 - 8 p.m. A funeral service will be held on Thursday at 1 p.m. in First Presbyterian Church of VA Beach followed by a graveside service in Forest Lawn Cemetery.
