KLOCKGETHER SISTER MARY GEORGE, R.S.M.
A Pittsburgh Sister of Mercy for 87 years, died at the Convent of Mercy on April 18, 2013. Born in Wilmerding, PA, she was 103 years old. Daughter of William and Mary (Diamond) Klockgether. Sister Mary George entered the Sisters of Mercy from Sacred Heart Parish in Pittsburgh in 1925 and made final vows in 1931. Sister Mary George earned a B.Ed. from Mount Mercy College (now Carlow University). She taught at several area Catholic schools including St. Andrew, St. Colman, St. Peter in McKeesport, St. Peter, North Side, St. Elizabeth of Hungary, St. Winifred and St. Cyril of Alexandria. After retiring from teaching, Sister Mary George was a home visitor to the elderly in Sun City West, AZ, and most recently retired to the ministry of prayer. Sister Mary George had a gift for reading people and always looked for the little things that would bring them joy. Her family and Sisters knew her as feisty, quick-witted, and a no-nonsense teacher whose cheerful demeanor caused children to want to be around her. She particularly enjoyed teaching art and music. A woman of prayer and a woman of action, she was even an air raid warden in World War II. She lived life to its fullest. Preceded in death by her parents, her brothers Robert, Hugh, Joseph, Cyril, and sisters, Louise, Monica, Helen and Rose (Sister Madeleine Klockgether, R.S.M.). Sister Mary George is survived by her nieces, Elaine Gorski, Diane Taylor and Linda King, and other loving family. Friends will be received Sunday from 1-8 p.m. at the Convent of Mercy, 3333 Fifth Avenue. Funeral Mass will be celebrated Monday at 11 a.m. in the Chapel at the Convent of Mercy, followed by interment in St. Xavier's Cemetery, Latrobe, PA. Arrangements entrusted to the EDWARD P. KANAI FUNERAL HOME, 500 Greenfield Avenue. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Sisters of Mercy, 3333 Fifth Ave., Pittsburgh, PA 15213 or Carlow University Scholarship Fund.
