John Updike Obituary

Updike, John B.

John B. Updike, 84 of Hillcrest, passed away on Thursday, March 28, 2013 after a brief illness. He was predeceased in 2000 by his wife, Helen after almost 50 years of marriage. He is survived by his children David Updike and Lorna O'Connor, Dundalk, Ireland, John (Janet) Updike and Mark Updike, Binghamton and Susan (James) Haskell, Cicero, NY; his six grandchildren - Connor Updike, Binghamton and James, John, Michael, Max and Luke Haskell, Cicero, NY - who held a special place in his heart and brought him much joy. Also surviving are his sisters-in-law Elizabeth Budd, Appomattox, VA and Margaret Goodman, Binghamton, as well as many nieces and nephews. He was a member of St. Francis of Assisi Church, Hillcrest. He retired from Singer Link with more than 30 years of dedicated service. He was an avid Yankee fan who enjoyed nothing more than sitting on his porch listening to the games. CNN was his favorite and kept him up to date on all the latest news. He will also be greatly missed by his neighbors, especially the children, who knew "Mr. John" always had candy to share. He was a loving father and grandfather and will be sorely missed. A Funeral Mass will be offered at St. Francis of Assisi Church, Chenango Street, Hillcrest Tuesday at 10 a.m. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Johnson City. The family will receive friends at the J.A. McCormack Sons Funeral Home, 141 Main Street, Binghamton Monday from 4-7 p.m. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a contribution in John's memory to the following support group for families dealing with autism - FEAT of CNY, 51 Carousel Lane, Baldwinsville, NY 13027.

Not sure what to say?

I don't know if any of the Updike children will respond, but this is Mike Hawley who enjoyed the Updike family. What is prompting me to connect now as I have a 38-year old who has autism and is visiting me in Eugene, OR. Would be interested in any commentary from the Updike gang.

Thanks-

Mike

I have so many wonderful memories of your Dad up at Sandy Pond as a kid growing up with Susie. Sitting on the beach everyday, he was always reading a book. Always smiling getting a good chuckle out of us kids. Loved your Mom and Dad!! I'm glad my Dad has good friends in heaven from Sandy Pond. Love, Dan, Steph, Samantha, and Jake Landry

David,John,Mark, and families; I am so sorry of hearing of your Dad's passing. There were some great memories of all of you growing up in Hillcrest. A very close knit town who gave me a fantastic childhood growing up. And being the paper boy for the town gave me the opportunity to know everybody. Always remember when I was a little tyke and wandered into your house and the phone rang and I answered it by saying no ones home. And who could forget the legendary "Patches". That dog never seen a car he did not like to chase up Nowlan to Chenango. He was our Nowlan Road watchdog. All three of you boys were great to me as a kid and I will always remember that. And your Mom and Dad will always have a place in my heart. May you find peace and comfort during this time.

My fondest memory of Your Dad: Being the first to wake up at Sandy Pond, he would fix us a bowl of Grape Nuts and banana. Then the two of us would go outside to share the beautiful morning on the dock. Just eating and talking. The perfect way to start the day with someone you love.
You are all in our hearts and thoughts-
