Eugene Gorman Obituary

Gorman, Eugene P.

Eugene Paul Gorman, 85, of South Portland, Maine, passed away at his home on February 27, 2013 after a brief illness. Gene was born in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania on July 23, 1927, the son of the late Mary and Walter J. Gorman. He later moved with his family to Scranton, Pennsylvania and then to Binghamton, New York. Gene was a Navy veteran from WWII, serving for a short time on the U.S.S. Orion in Panama. He worked as a draftsman at Link Aviation and Raymond Corporation before taking a job working for the State of New York. He retired from the Security Department of the Binghamton Psychiatric Center in 1991. He often reminisced about working alongside his brother Jack. He married Martha A. Williams in August 1956 in St. James Church in Johnson City, New York. They were married for 56 years. Gene and Martha moved to South Portland, Maine in 1995 to be near their three grandsons. Gene never planned to move away from New York and knew he would miss his family, but his time in Maine became an unexpected adventure filled with years of happiness and the chance to help raise his grandsons and be part of their lives. With his move from New York to Maine, he changed his sport team allegiances from the Yankees and Giants to the Red Sox and Patriots (a controversial decision within the family). He also enjoyed family vacations, puzzles, going out to eat, sitting near the water at Bug Light with his wife and visiting family in Binghamton. Gene was predeceased by his parents; his stepfather George Weaver; his sister Louise Fiore and brother Capt. Walter J. Gorman. He is survived by his wife Martha Gorman, daughter Denise Beck, son-in-law Matthew Beck and grandsons Evan, Jackson and Conor Beck of South Portland; his brother Jack Gorman and his wife Marge of Binghamton, New York and several nephews (and grand nephews), nieces (and grand-nieces) and cousins. There will be a memorial service and celebration of his life at 11 a.m. on Saturday, April 6 at Hobbs Funeral Home, 230 Cottage Road in South Portland, Maine. Online condolences may be expressed at www.hobbsfuneralhome.com. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to: VNA Home Health & Hospice, VNA Development Office, 144 State Street, Portland, Maine 04101.
