Carl Paccio Obituary

Paccio, Carl A.

Carlo Anthony "Patch" Paccio

Carlo did it 'his way' and passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his family on Friday, December 12, 2014. It seemed only fitting that he passed away early in the morning so he wouldn't be "late" for Frank Sinatra's 99th birthday party in heaven. He is predeceased by his parents, Augustine & Mary Paccio, his in-laws, John & Susan Plavka, his son-in-law Mark DelVillano, and his grandson Steven Adam Thomas DelVillano. He is survived by his loving wife of 52 years, Carole (Plavka), his 7 C's: Carla Paccio; Christina (DelVillano) & Alan Gnall, Claudine & Tony Kniffen; Candice & Bob Lund; Corrine & George Edmonds; Cara & Matt Green and Carl G. & Julia Paccio; his grandchildren: Danielle, Nicole, and Kristopher DelVillano; Kaili, Kade, and Ty Kniffen; Bobby, Alex, Thomas, and Christian Lund; Elena & Ian Edmonds; Braeden & Padraig Green; and Mia Paccio. His Aunt Irene Jacobs, Sisters-in-law and Brothers-in-law, Anne (& the late Joe) Shapinas, Jo (& the late Ed) Sedor, Mary & Bill Orzell, and Jane & Sam Mastrogiovanni. Along with many nieces, nephews, cousins, and godchildren. And not to forget his St. Bernard, Casi.

He graduated from Binghamton North High School and served in the Navy during the Korean War. He then went on to attend Clarkson University. After transferring to Purdue University, he graduated with a BS in Electrical Engineering. He then became their biggest fan and felt he had a direct line to the University President's office which he used on at least 2 occasions. He loved his Boilermakers. He retired from Singer Link after 30+ years, and he also retired from Sheltered Workshop and NCI.

Carlo could never sit still and always had to have background noise in the house (even if it was his static radio). He was president for many years of the Link Activities Club, active in the Johnson City JayCees, he loved golf and ran the Links Black Cat Golf League for over 35 years as well as helping with the Msgr Tidick Golf tournament. He started the St Michael's bowling league and served as secretary. Everyone looked forward to his banquets and receiving their memorable gag awards. He also found time to be a high school basketball referee.

He was an active member of St. Michael's Church as well as a past trustee. You could always find him working at pirohi sales, hosting the strawberry shortcake booth at Family Days, and performing in the infamous Valentine's Day Dance skits. He brought the Italian flavor to St Michael's by running many Spaghetti Dinners featuring his special sauce.

He was an avid fan for all of his children's and grandchildren's sports activities and could be found at basketball courts, softball fields, band half time shows, swim meets, hockey rinks, soccer fields, golf courses, gymnastic meets, Disney Marathons, and Austin Danskin Triathlons. However he only was allowed to volunteer once at the Triathlon because during the race he wouldn't stop talking to his daughters and slowed them down. He always woke up, his son, CG extra early for early morning hockey games and practices so they would be the first one to the rink. In fact there were numerous times that they had to wait in the cold car because the rink wasn't even open yet.

Carlo loved being among his friends and family. He was one of the original Italian lunch bunch members. He looked forward to their monthly Monday 'meetings' and hanging out with his childhood buddies.

He was always up for a good time. Performing YMCA dance at weddings the 'Navy' way after handing out his Vitamin B1 pills to prevent hangovers, blinding his kids, nieces and nephews with his old super 8 video camera, and sharing his famous rum balls at Christmas time.

He had many hobbies that included garage saleing every Saturday with his daughter Chris where he found his many treasures (and then had to smuggled them into his house so Carole wouldn't see them), collecting boxes, books, and old record albums and making 300+ palm crosses at Easter by hand. He looked forward to participating in No Shave November with CG, family special events so he could post a happy ad in the Binghamton Press, and participating in April Fool's jokes.

He also loved spending time and traveling with his family to many places including Ocean City Md, Disney World, Aruba, Hawaii, Puerto Rico and many parts of Italy. Some memorable moments were his annual run through the dancing sprinklers at Disney without getting wet, buying Zoom drinks for EVERYONE at the resort pool in Aruba and charging it to Candi & Bob's room, carrying ALL the beach stuff with Carla as the sun was rising to get that good spot on the beach and then staying until sun set to catch the last ray, making Cara get up at the crack of dawn to hold a spot at the Travers Stakes at Saratoga Race Track, attending Corrine's college clambakes and making friends for Corrine that she didn't even know she had and always staying up late with Claudine to enjoy a good glass of wine when she visited. He enjoyed celebrating his 50th wedding anniversary with the entire clan in Puerto Rico and a month later with his extended family on a Seneca Lake wine tasting tour.

Carlo did relax once in a great while by sitting outside in the sun by the side of the pool, reading books and listening to Frank.

We would like to extend a special thank you for all those that took care of Carlo during these past few months … Fr Jim Dutko, Dr Gehring, Amela, Hospice Aide Mary Cosentino, Judy DelVillano, Diane Kearing, Ivetta Dervay, granddaughter Nicole, grandson Kristopher & new son-in-law Alan as well as the various relatives, neighbors and friends who stopped by to lend their support during this time. Also his son-in-law Bob for his love, care and daily phone calls.

He lived a long and fulfilling life 'his way' …. Hallelujah Brother.

He really didn't like flowers so please make a donation in Carlo's name to St Michael's Church.

Calling hours will be at the Thomas J. Shea Funeral Home, Inc. 137 Robinson St. Binghamton from 2-6pm on Sunday December 14th followed by a parastas (prayer service). A Funeral Service will be celebrated by Very Rev. Protopresbyter James Dutko at 10am on Monday December 15th at St Michael's Greek Catholic Church on Clinton Street followed by a burial at St. Michael's Cemetery. Arrangements are in the care of Albert J. DeMarco.

Carole and the 7 C's! Although I was only a part of your family for several years when I lived in Johnson City, I loved getting your annual Christmas card! The family pictures and family adventures were wonderful! Please accept my very belated sympathy, but I know Carl is organizing events in heaven! It was a pleasure and honor to be so warmly received into your family! Warmest thoughts and prayers to all Howard and Delores Wilson Price

Dear Carla, Chris, Mrs. Paccio, and family,
We were so sorry to hear about the loss of your dad. The world needs more nice people, not less. Rely on each other to get through this incredibly difficult time. I'd like to say it gets better, but it never does when you lose a parent. Now you've got to carry on his legacy of kindness and giving. He was a good man, and he and your mother raised some great kids, and now you carry a part of him and all of the great traits he instilled in you. Celebrate his wonderful life, and make him proud, and some day you'll have an eternity with him.
Funny, seems like just yesterday we were having a huge, community 'kick the can' game, and now two of the best coaches are gone. Hope your pain subsides some soon, and praying for your comfort,
The Zeccolas.

I was very saddened by this news when I received the call from my Mom. I always enjoyed Mr. Paccio's sense of humor and kidding him about his beloved Purdue Boilermakers. If he wasn't their number 1 fan, then who was? My condolences to Mrs. Paccio and all the C's. You are all in my thoughts and prayers.

A tribute so beautifully written, it could only have come from the love and pride of family passed down from an extraordinary father to his beloved children. Having had several of the "C"s as students at LWW years ago, i can attest to the wonderful legacy he has left and that will surely be carried on in his memory. Blessings on you all at this difficult time.

Sorry to hear of Carl's passing. As a schoolmate in the North High class of 1952 I appreciated Carl's integral part in organizing our many class reunions. Through his efforts we were able to re-unite with classmates at these functions.

We just love you Carl and this beautiful obit was truly a window to your wonderful life! Thank you for letting us be a part of your life. Our lives have been so much richer by knowing you. You taught us that Giving of your Time is the most precious gift of all. Much love to Carol and the 7 C's. We are out of town but will be there tomorrow to celebrate your wonderful life. Your favorite quote as you closed the bowling banquet each year, "Don't walk behind me; I may not lead. Don't walk in front of me, I may not follow. Just walk beside me and be my friend."

Carole and the Paccio Family, Carl was a great person and will be missed by so many people. We worked with him at Link. Your tribute to him brought back so many memories. He had so much energy and always made us laugh; a pleasure to work with. We enjoyed the rum balls every year though we accused him of using whiskey! He had so many stories and one of our favorites was when he tied a St. Bernard puppy to the front door on Christmas morning. We always saw him at St. Michaels and he really lit up the room. He loved his family and life. We are so glad we got to spend time with him. We are so sorry for your loss and our prayers are with you and your family at this time.

Carlo truly was the greatest man I ever knew. He loved the company of all who knew him. I loved hearing the stories he had about his time growing up on the "Paccio compund" on Henry St. to his escapades with his childhood friends and his cars, to his time in the navy and lastly making our own stories together and as a family. He will never be forgotten, and taught me to smile and laugh no matter what life thows in your way, and ofcourse to do it your way.

My sincere sympathy to Carole and family. Please know I care. I can't help remembering Carl at this time in the holiday season. He was always full of joy and the Christmas spirit.
