Shirley Waskuvich Obituary

Waskuvich, Shirley

Shirley Waskuvich, 88, a longtime resident of Conklin passed away peacefully on Saturday, September 12, 2015 after a long and rewarding life. Her devotion to family and faith in God gave her peace to return to her heavenly home. Our mother was born and raised in Syracuse, New York. The youngest of 9 children she learned at an early age to live a loving Christian life. She began working at the young age of 15 at a Fannie Farmer candy store and retired after numerous years with Singer Link. Our mother enjoyed the simple pleasures of life; attending her grandchildren's events, cooking for family and friends, caring for Mia, Chico and the many dogs her family brought home over the years, tending to the yard, visiting Tioga Downs, following Syracuse basketball, and most importantly sharing the importance of organ donation. Mom was instrumental in working to pass a law providing insurance coverage for kidney donors. Our mother was predeceased in death by her husband Charles and her son Edward. She is survived by a family she loved very much that will miss her everyday; son, Stephen and grandchildren, Teresa, and Jamie; daughter, Donna, and grandson Tim (Kelly), all of New York; daughter and son-in-law Mary and Mike Seaman, Mansfield, Texas and grandchildren; Jon (Lisa) and great-grandson Tyler Seaman, Scottsdale, Arizona, and Krissy (Jonathan) Baker, Lewisville, Texas. Mom leaves an extended family including Pat, Barb, Rose, loving nieces and nephews, special neighbors Connie and Ike Studgeon, and Jean Terry, and respected medical friends Dr Ramanujan, Nancy Evans, NP, and Dr. Peter Lethin. A special thanks to the staff at Wilson for their professionalism and kindness during our Mom's final days. Our mother saw the best in everyone and treated everyone she met with kindness and respect. It was her hope that others would learn from her example. "Live so that when your children think of fairness, caring, and integrity, they think of you". At our mother's request the family will hold a private burial service at a later date. Arrangements are by Albert J. DeMarco at the THOMAS J. SHEA Funeral Home Inc. In her memory please share an act of kindness to someone in need. Those who wish may kindly consider a memorial contribution in Shirley's name to the Broome County Dog Shelter Trust Fund, 110 Cutler Pond Road, Binghamton, NY 13905.

Please accept my sincere condolences. I know how much you will miss your mom/grandma.

Shirley was like a second mom to me for many years. I was always made to feel welcome and valued in her home, even when I spent entire Saturdays eating her food, tramping across her carpets and interrupting her work. She welcomed the chaos and confusion of her daughters' many friends with smiles and abundant snacks. She often served as our personal taxi driver, but never grudgingly. None of us would ever consider uttering a negative remark about her; she was simply that wonderful.

Donna and I used to remark that we were blessed to have such good-natured, dependable, wise mothers, and I'm glad that we realized this at a young age; it gave us lots of time to appreciate them.

John 11:26 promises that those who believe in the Lordship of Christ will never die. That is good news for Shirley, as it is for all who trust in the saving power of God's only begotten Son. So, though we miss her temporarily, we look forward to the (not so distant) future when we will see her again.

It has been my honor and privilege to know this extraordinary woman. There are not many who would go out of their way, often in the middle of the night, to help with an ill grandchild as she often did. Her patience and kindness will always be remembered by those of us who knew her. Please accept my deepest condolences Waskuvich family. Remember your mom always, keep her close in your hearts and try to do as she would do. Arline Seaman
