Delbert Cobleigh Obituary

Cobleigh, Delbert

Binghamton: Athlete, referee, and musician extraordinaire, died on January 5, 2013 following a seven-year valiant struggle with multiple health challenges. Born in Kingston, PA on August 12, 1942 to Edward and Ella Cobleigh, Del graduated from Binghamton North High School's "Tech/Elec" program in 1961 and completed his BS in Mathematics in 3 years while on a music scholarship at Mississippi State University. Following graduation, Del served in the Army Reserves, then returned to the Triple Cities where he was employed for many years at Link Aviation working in the Apollo Space Program, and later at IBM, working in both Owego and New Jersey in the Federal Defense Program. As an athlete, Del played baseball, softball and volleyball on numerous area teams as well as the Empire State Senior Games. He was active as a STAC and CYO basketball referee as well as softball and baseball umpire. As a musician, Del studied trumpet under Bernard Shiffrin, and was invited by Fritz Wallenberg to be one of the youngest trumpet players in the Binghamton Symphony. Del also played with Tri-Cities Opera, BC Pops, European Brass, Mason Warrington, Wally G and the Moonlight Connection, Binghamton Community Orchestra and in many area churches. Del was a life-long member of Boulevard United Methodist Church, and for thirty years sang in its Men's Quartet. This gentle, caring, easy-going friend to all is survived by relatives Sharon Robinson, Merwyn Jones, Gladys Chapple and a close circle of friends who loved Del as family. A Funeral service will be held on Tuesday, January 8, 2013 at 10 a.m. at Barber Memorial Home, Inc., 428 Main St., Johnson City. with Rev. Allyson Aylesworth officiating. I just found out about Del. What a loss. He was a wonderful man and always had kind words of encouragement. I will miss you my friend. I will never forget the multiple Christmas Eve services we would play, sometimes 5 that day and night; always handled through Del. Be at peace my friend.

I worked with Del at LINK for several years. My kids remember fondly the LAC Old Timer Game trips to Yankee Stadium and the softball games at Cole Park with Del. I would like to express to the family my sincere and heartfelt condolences. Rest in Peace, Del.

Del - was a great friend who did a lot for peopele in a blessed way - I would call him a silent saint- He played trumpet solo's at my wedding in 1993 Mass and did trumpet solo at my commissioning Mass in 1985 - He was a great pitcher in the game of softball and never lost his cool as a palyer coach, or as an umpire. He loved the game of softball and in his last years; he would walk from his nursing home to watch games at BCC for hours and would give good comments to help players and umpires improve - My spouse and I will miss him forever - In Christ - Tim and Susan George

I'm sorry to hear of Del's passing. We played trumpet together in the IBM band and he was always a joy to sit next to at rehearsals and concerts.

Del's intensity of his playing the trumpet was exceeded only by the friendly intensity of his eyes.

I'm so happy to see all the beautiful pictures of Del that everyone sent in. I've only known Del for seven years (after his stoke). He was an amazing man and would put a smile on everyone that was near him. I needed his friendship more then he needed mine. I will miss you so much my friend.

Del was a good neighbor, and full of fun. Now he is free of his struggles and still playing his trumpet for the glory of God. My thoughts and prayers are with his family and close friends.

Extraordinary only begins to touch what a special man Del was. He led his life with such amazing energy and enthusiasm that it was always a treat to meet and speak with him, even when he was overcoming truly daunting health challenges that would have put a lesser spirit down. I myself , as well as all of his fellow BCO members, will long remember him as we try to live up to his example as a true amateur - Lover- of music. May he enjoy joining Gabriel's ensemble in heaven.

Del,
Knowing you was a life-long gift of friendship, caring, laughter, singing, playing sports; and conversation that ranged from music and sports to math, chemistry and everything in between. Oh-- and ice-cream and mashed potatoes! (p.s. --- probably no trumpet mutes in heaven!) We will miss you much, dear, dear friend. With love, Allyson, Lynn and Colin
