Pierson, Douglas L.

Douglas L. Pierson, 93, passed away on Thursday, November 24, 2011, at Lourdes Hospital with family by his side. He was a resident of the United Methodist Homes, Hilltop Campus, Johnson City, NY. Douglas was born on August 17, 1918 in Rush, PA and was the son of the late Donald and Letha Pierson. He was preceded in death just four weeks ago by his high school sweetheart and loving wife of 73 years, Beverly Arlene Pierson. He is also survived by his six children, Ron (Bev) Pierson, Gene (Nancy) Pierson, Marita (Jim) Root, Jim (Marcia) Pierson, Elaine (Forrest) Brown and Dennis (Pam) Pierson; 12 grandchildren, Jimmy (Amy) Root, Ron (Jody) Pierson, Tina (Dennis) Shaul, David Root, Janette (Doug) Graham, Jeff (Marie) Pierson, Kevin (Meghan) Root, Dana (Sarah) Pierson, Tonia (Jerry) Tracy, Jennifer Pierson, Colleen (Josh) Heaton and Jesse (Marianne) Pierson; 19 great-grandchildren, 5 step great-grandchildren, 7 step great-great-grandchildren; 2 sisters, Esther Brink and Phyllis (Jim) Flick; 1 brother, Charles (Regina) Pierson; and several nieces and nephews. He was employed by Link Aviation, Hillcrest, as a Flight Trainer Technician and by Kingsley's Hardware, Binghamton, as the Warehouse Manager. He volunteered his services as President of the Zephyrhills Home Owner Association, a member of the Chenango Forks Central School Board, and an elder of the United Methodist Church. He was recognized by family and friends as a baseball player, a lifelong fisherman, bowler, NY Yankee fan and master gardener who cherished his annual bumper crops. He would most like to be remembered as a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. Douglas was an active member of the Chenango Bridge United Methodist Church for over 70 years. He served in many key financial positions including Trustee. A memorial service for family and friends will be held at the United Methodist Church, Chenango Bridge, NY, at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, December 17, 2011. He will be placed to rest in the East Rush Cemetery, East Rush, PA. Sutfin Funeral Chapel in Nichols, NY, will be handling the arrangements. The family requests those wishing to make a memorial contribution do so in his name to either the Mended Little Hearts, 101 Palmer Hill Road, Port Crane, NY 13833, or, to the United Methodist Homes Hilltop Campus, Resident Assistance Program, 10 Acre Place, Binghamton, NY 13904.

I am very sorry to hear about Doug's passing. Both Doug and Arlene were very influential in my early life as our two families visited frequently together. My father and mother's wedding picture shows a dashing Doug as their best man. He still is. Please accept my sincere condolences for the whole family.
