Gladys Smith Obituary
Gladys T. Smith
of Johnson CityGladys T. Smith, 83, of Johnson City, N.Y., went to be with her heavenly Father on August 3, 2006. Gladys was born on June 10, 1923, the daughter of Frank and Roxanna Forster. She was predeceased by her parents, her husband, Ken in 1973; her sisters, Ruth Swift and Eva Slater; and two infant grandchildren, Michael Kochis and Aubrey Gianfrate. She is survived by her children, Kenneth and Leslie Smith, Kathleen Turner and Joseph Mackin, James Smith, Patricia and Paul Kochis, Joseph and Janice Smith, Roxanne and Charles Gianfrate; two sisters and a brother, Edith Ladd, Pauline Prouty, Leonard and Mary Forster. She was "Grandma Gladys" to nine grandchildren, Jeff and Robert Turner, Amy Newman and Jennifer Smith, Christina, Paul, Shannon and Matthew Kochis, and Sarah Gianfrate. She also had five great-grandchildren, Ashley, Makayla, Jessica, Maia, and Wyatt Turner. She is also survived by several nieces and nephews including two special nieces, Mrs. Janet Maitland and Mrs. Sylvia Kempf. Gladys worked as a beautician in the Binghamton area from 1941 to 1963. She then worked for Link Aeronautics and retired from Universal Instruments in 1986. She loved gardening, sewing, bingo, and traveling. Thanks to our brother, Ken, she was able to visit Hawaii, California, Texas, Florida and the Southeast. She had a great sense of humor and loved a good joke. By her patience, all of her daughters were able to learn how to give a slippery infant their first bath at home, and she was always there when we would call her about a sick child in the night. We would like to thank our brother, Jim, for his devotion and dedication to our mother these past several years as her primary caregiver. By his care she was able to remain home far longer than was expected. We would also like to thank the Staff of the Star unit of the James G. Johnston Nursing Home for their care and support. Lastly, we would like to thank Nancy Evans and Dr. Ramanujan for their kindness and compassion in caring for our mother. For eternity and beyond you will be loved!
