J. Rogan Obituary

J. Richard Rogan,
formerly of Binghamton
J. Richard Rogan, 74, passed away on Oct. 2 after a long and courageous battle with cancer.
He was born Nov. 19, 1934, in Binghamton. He is preceded in death by his parents, John J. Rogan and Hazel Harrison Rogan. He leaves behind his loving wife of 51 years, Judith Watson Rogan; his son and daughter-in-law, David and Mary Ann Rogan of Vestal; his daughter, Teresa Rogan of Chandler, AZ; three granddaughters, Katherine, Samantha, and Ellen Rogan, all of Vestal; one grandson, Zachary Rogan of Chandler, AZ; a sister and brother-in-law, Mary Joyce and D. Edwin Lyons of Hillcrest, and three nieces and one nephew.
Dick Rogan graduated from St. Paul's Catholic School in Binghamton, received his associate's degree from Broome Tech Community College in 1955 and joined the Naval Reserve. Upon graduation from college, he worked in purchasing at Link Aviation, where he met his wife-to-be, Judith. During his two years of active duty in the CBs Unit MCB-6 as Captains Yeoman 3rd Class, he was stationed in various locations, including Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, and Roosevelt Roads, Puerto Rico.
Upon his return from active duty, Dick and Judy were married and Dick was hired in 1959 by Federal Electronics Inc. in Vestal; he rose to company president in 1970. In 1974, he and Judy formed Rogan Electronics Inc., which they operated until their retirement in 1999. The couple relocated to Phoenix, AZ, where Dick stayed active by working in security for Pinkerton and Del Webb. He always credited his success at Rogan Electronics to his dedicated, loyal and hardworking employees whom he considered as family.
Along with his many career accomplishments, Dick also received several accolades from the community for his charitable contributions over the years. Among these was the Creative Human Service Award, presented by Volunteers of America to only 90 persons nationwide each year; personal acknowledgement by then Sen. Daniel P. Moynihan for generous contributions to the City of Binghamton, and the Key to the City from former Mayor Juanita Crabb.
Interment will be at the National Memorial Cemetery of Arizona, 23029 N. Cave Creek Road, Phoenix, AZ. Services will be held at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made in Dick's memory to Volunteers of America of Western New York, 320 Chenango St., Binghamton, NY 13901, or to The American Cancer Society, 4550 E. Bell Road #126, Phoenix, AZ 85032.

Judy, David, Mary Ann, Teresa and families;
We are so sorry to hear about the passing of Dick. What a loss for everyone who ever had the joy of meeting him. I was lucky enough to work with him and see him on a daily basis - he was kind, generous, loving and funny. My family became part of the extended Rogan family and loved each and every moment. Our thoughts and prayers are with you during this difficult time.

To Judy, David, Teresa and Family:
Cousin John here.
Dick has a special place in my heart and in my memories. Some of the fondest memories I have go back to the late '40's and early '50's and the summers I spent at Aunt Hazel's and Uncle John's. Dick and I went to the Trips' games every night, taking the bus to Johnson City. That was a bit before Dick acquired the first great acquistion of his life, his sleek yellow Ford. He polished it up every day.
He was an enthusiastic, personable guy to be around, and we had a lot of fun together. In every family gathering (where there was usually a game of poker or pitch being played while the dinner was being prepared), Dick , even at a young age, actively participated ,and usually walked away with a goodly portion of his relatives' assets.
The picture you have chosen for this guest book depicts him as I will remember him always - bright-eyed and eager to take on life's challenges.
Becky and I share in your loss.
Our sympathies and best wishes to you all.

To the Rogan Family:
My sympathies to the Rogan family. I went to St. Patrick's Academy with his cousins, the Fallons, among others. I remember Dick when he sent to St. Paul's when the only game in town was St. Pat's vs St. Paul's. He was unique then and he remained unique trough his entire life. May God guide you through this vale of tears and give you the strength to carry on with your lives. God Bless!
