John E. Sluznis
of Binghamton
John E. Sluznis, 87, passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday, September 30, 2008. He was survived by his fiancee, Eileen J. (Heslin) McNamara, until she joined him in death on October 2, 2008. His survivors include two daughters, Sylvia Schiffman, Whitney Point, Nancy Garrett, Waldorf, Md.; a son, Stephen J. Sluznis, Whitney Point; ten grandchildren, one great-granddaughter, also 17 nieces and nephews. He was a graduate of Binghamton North High School. Mr. Sluznis retired with the rank of Captain with the Binghamton Fire Department after 40 years of service. He was a US Navy veteran of WWII as a Second Class Aviation Machinists Mate. He was employed at Link Aviation, Binghamton, N.Y., helping to build the first Flight Simulator used to train pilots in modern aviation. While in the Navy, John's skills were used to instruct via the Link Flight Simulator's new Navy pilots in tasks such as night flying. The work and teachings saved many pilots and aircraft, adding greatly to the war effort.

May God be with him always. In my youth he was a strong role model for a kid from the other side of the tracks.

We were fortunate enough to meet "Uncle Jack" thru his nieces, Joan Fontaine, Margaret Sluznis, Jane Smith and Rita Jardin. What a truly remarkable man. His love showed in every word he spoke. We saw the love he had for his nieces and watched with awe how they all loved him back. He was like a 2nd father to them and I always envied the love this remarkable man brought to their lives. We fell in love with him the moment we meet him. We have such fond memories of our days at his camp in Canada . My husband caught his first deer with Uncle Jack. Thanks for all the memories Uncle Jack we will miss you dearly. I know there are no words to ease the pain of his loss you all most feel, but hope you can hold onto the memories you made together and take comfort in the fact that you will be together again some day. God Bless. Remember Our loss is heavens gain.
