John Riley Obituary

Riley, John

Binghamton: John Riley, 78, passed away peacefully at home Saturday, August 6, 2011 with his beloved wife of 53 years, Alice and his loving family by his side. Born September 15, 1932 in Liverpool, England, his family came to America on the Queen Mary when John was in his early twenties. John worked at Singer-Link for many years before moving onto Raymond Corporation where he worked his way up the corporate ladder, retiring as Corporate Vice President of Human Resources. A veteran of both the United States Army, serving during the Korean War, and the Royal Air Force of England. John loved having family picnics, gardening, and traveling, especially working at Yellowstone National Park. He loved watching soccer, the NY Giants, auto racing and was an avid Earnhardt Sr. and Jr. fan. John volunteered his time with various local agencies including founding the Hospice unit at Lourdes Hospital. He was a lector at St. John the Evangelist Church and promoted spiritual growth and positive thinking. His British accent and dry sense of humor will be greatly missed. The family deeply appreciates all of the kindness and excellent care received by Dr. Talati and the Wound Care Center.

John was predeceased by his sister Joan Sliter and brother Peter Riley. He is survived by his beloved wife Alice, children; Thomas Riley, Binghamton, Anne and Bill Comerota, Conklin, David Riley, Ledyard, CT and Mary and Jim Coffey, Binghamton, treasured grandchildren; Christopher, Amanda, Patrick, Ryan and Adam. He leaves behind brother, Tony and Ann Riley of Vestal, brother-in-law, Smitty and Gladys Sliter of Hudson FL and sister-in-law, Sheree Riley of Minneapolis Minn., special nephew, Terry and Sharon Clarke of England as well as several nieces and a nephew.

There will be a gathering to celebrate his life and share fond memories on John's birthday at 2pm, Thursday, September 15, 2011 at the Riley residence. Please accept my condolences Alice and everyone else. I will never forget you Uncle John. You were a great,funny,up beat person who was cherished by so many of us that were fortunate enough to know you. From your charming accent to your loving nature, we all will miss you greatly. I always looked forward to being around you,from the Riley party's to your visits at our house when you would act lost to amuse me and Holly when you were actually hiding dollar bills under our pillows. Rest peacefully and keep an eye on my Dad for me please until we can all be reunited again in the heavenly earth. My thoughts and prayers are with all of us who love you and miss you.

Very sorry to hear the news. I remember John from the "Southside Days" as I was a good friend of his brother Pete and spent a lot of time @ their house. May he rest in peace and you all find comfort in knowing that he was a gentlemen and friend to many, but mostly because of his love of family.
