Marjorie Berg Obituary

Marjorie Berg "E"

Binghamton - Marjorie (Segrue) Berg passed away from complications of dementia at the age of 96 with her family by her side on Monday, December 10th, 2018. To her family and friends she was known as "E" given to her by her grandson Billy 40 some years ago. She referred to herself as Aunt Margie to her nieces and nephews and to others as Marge. She was predeceased by her husband Bill (Pop) and her loving daughter Judy who passed away four years ago. They were inseparable and shared a beautiful and special mother daughter relationship. Also predeceasing mom was her parents, Johno and Genevive along with sisters, Regina and Rosemary with brothers Billy, Gene, Bobby and Jimmy. Mom is survived by her devoted son Bill and daughter in law Sue, who were able to keep her in her home until she needed extended care. Also surviving mom was her sister Marilyn Newton(Charlotte) brothers Eddie and Donald, (Jean) and devoted son in law Jerry Cavanaugh. She is also survived by three grandsons, Bill(Cindy), Todd, and Jerry Cavanaugh (Christine); and six greatgrandchildren, Emily, Noah, Meghan, Luke, Molly and Zach Berg. We truly appreciated over the years the home caregivers, the dedication and professionalism they showed to mom with TLC. We thank Kim, Barbara, Lisa, Becky and Joan for the 24 hour care. We truly appreciated the care provided to mom by all the staff at Elizabeth Church Manor, especially Amy and Tina; and the nursing staff and aides on the second floor. Mom was a pioneer in the communication industry beginning with NY telephone, followed by stints at WNBF and concluding with 30 plus years running the switchboard at singer link both in Hillcrest and Kirkwood where she met many lifelong friends. Though her biggest asset was that of being a mother, wife and confidant. She was the matriarch and care giver to her siblings of the Segrue family from a very young age with the untimely early death of her mother. She assumed that role until they were all raised and out on their own. Mom loved traveling and vacations at the shore, especially Wildwood Crest, Norfolk and more recently Myrtle Beach. But nothing topped her desire to dabble in OTB and the nearest slot machines. Her brothers and sister were extremely vigilant in the day to day contact with their sister, especially Marilyn (sister) who called her every day from North Carolina as well as Duck and Jean and Eddie who spent hours twice a week keeping mom's spirits up. And a big thanks to all the nieces who brought dinners and shared a glass of wine to keep her spirits afloat. Mom's dementia took her mentally from us too soon, but her desire to continue to be a physical part of our family was commendable and at times exhausting for her, but her willingness to goforth should be and will be an inspiration to all who knew her.. May she now be at peace. Visitation will be held on Friday December 14, 2018 from 5 until 7pm at the Thomas J. Shea Funeral Home Inc. 137 Robinson St. Binghamton, NY 13904. A Funeral Mass will be offered on Saturday December 15, 2018 at St Paul's Catholic Church at 10am, her church for 95plus years. Burial will follow on Calvary Cemetery. In lieu of flowers please consider a donation to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital 501 St. Jude place Memphis, TN 38105 or St. Paul's food pantry. Arrangements are with Albert J. DeMarco at the Thomas J. Shea Funeral Home Inc.

Dear Berg, Cavanaugh, and Segrue families,

My sincere condolences in your loss of a lovely lady.. Mrs. Berg was all smiles when I was introduced to her at City Hall.
I knew she lived around the corner from me, and I was so happy to finally meet Bill and Judy's mother.
Mrs. Berg had many mutual friends from Link, and the East Side. Mrs. Berg will always be remembered by her kindness to others.

Dear Bill, Sue, Ed, Jerry and all,

Marge certainly did not look her age. She was as charming as ever. I considered it a privilege to visit her representing St. Paul's Parish and as a friend. She was so entertaining. Now she is receiving her reward which she so deserved as she joins her husband, daughter and sister-in-law Sister Veronica Berg, Congregation of the Daughters of Charity. May they all rest together in peace and happiness. Be assured of my prayers for the family. Wish I could be there but as you know I am retired living in Albany.
