Norman French Obituary

French, Norman E.

Vestal: Norman E. French, 67 of Vestal, died Sunday, October 21, 2012, after a 4 1/2 year courageous battle with ALS. He was predeceased by his parents, Norman and Catharine French; and his father-in-law, Joseph Scarantino. He is survived by his loving wife of 45 years, Angie (Scarantino) French, Vestal; his children, Denise and Lou McAllister, Vestal, and Derek and Pearl French, Carmel, IN. He was a wonderful 'Papa" to his grandchildren, Maggie and Matt McAllister, and Logan and Brody French. He is also survived by his mother-in-law, Katie Scarantino; brother-in-laws Charlie (Judy) Scarantino and Pete (Maxine) Scarantino, a special cousin Russ (Sharon) Smith as well as nephews, cousins and many very special friends. Norm retired from L3, formerly Singer-Link, after 42 years. He enjoyed his weekly golf outings at Ely Park and annual fishing trips to the St. Lawrence River with his friends from Link. He was a board member and treasurer of the Valley Industrial Credit Union for over 20 years. After growing up in Conklin and later raising his family there, he and Angie transferred to Oviedo Florida in 1996 where they spent 12 wonderful years enjoying the restaurants and attractions throughout the Orlando area. He always looked forward to having his family come down to visit them and being a tour guide around Orlando while sharing his aspiration of driving the monorail at Disney World in his retirement. While in Florida, he became an avid fan of UCF football and enjoyed tailgating at every home game. He spent every Memorial Day weekend at the beach with close friends and family. He was an enthusiastic NY Yankees fan and supported Vestal Little League and Volleyball, and was a passionate supporter of his grandchildren's activities. The family wishes to thank the nurses on South Tower 5 at Wilson Memorial Hospital and the Vestal Emergency Squad and all supporters of the ALS walk and 'Team Normy". Funeral Services will be held at the J.A. McCormack Sons Funeral Home, 141 Main St., Binghamton, Thursday at 10 a.m. Reverend Laurence J. Lord will officiate. Burial will be in Vestal Hills Memorial Park. The family will receive friends at the McCormack Funeral Home Wednesday from 4-7 p.m. In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy in memory of Norm may be made to ALS Association, Upstate NY Chapter, 890 7th St. Suite 108, Liverpool. NY 13088.

Angie, Denise, Derek & Family,

It was a pleasure to have known and worked with Norm for many years. It is a shame that such a debilitating disease affected such a strong person. I am sure it was a struggle for you to see his condition deteriorate. I know that what kept him going was the care and loving support your family provided. He is in my thoughts often. “But those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.” – Isaiah 40:31

Angie & Family,
Rita and I just learned of Norm's passing from Diane Stento. Our prayers are with all of you. Norm was without doubt one of the best people I worked with at Link. He's one of those people you always knew 'had your back' when we were 'swimming against the current'. Our time together working in TX fostered a friendship that time and distance hasn't faded. Those nights in Kema eating seafood and enjoying the Gulf breezes created memories that will last forever. Norm will live on in our memories and no doubt you were the 'rock' that gave him strength in his battle with ALS.
All our love,
Joe & Rita

Angie, We have all been friends for over 50 years. Playing pinochle and eating popcorn at my parents because we could not afford anything else. Being in each other's weddings. Watching our kids grow and be friends as we were. It hurts so much that Norm has left us. He was so strong and he had such a positive attitude about the ALS. We will miss him so. We are here when you need us. Love to you and Denise and Derek and family. Cookie and Bob

I never enjoyed business travel except when it was a trip with Norm. He had the rare talent of being totally professional while being the funniest man I've ever met, both at the same time. He made the world a better place for all with whom he came in contact. He will be missed.
