William Freedman Obituary

William (Bill) Freedman
of Vestal/Johnson City
William (Bill) Freedman of Vestal/Johnson City died on June 12, 2009. His beloved wife, Ruth, predeceased him in 2001 after 59 wonderful years of marriage and partnership. He is survived by his two sons and a daughter-in-law, Darshan Singh and Akal Kaur Khalsa of Espanola, NM, and Richard J. Freedman of Santa Cruz, CA. He is also survived by two grandchildren, Suzannah C. Freedman of Santa Cruz, CA and Sat Khalsa Freedman of Honolulu, HI. Bill is also survived by a brother, Joseph Freedman of Albany, NY; and a sister, Marilyn Frisch of Delmar, NY. Bill was a veteran of World War II, having served as a meteorologist for the US Air Force. Upon his return, Bill received an MS in Technical Writing from RPI and worked for the Bell Aircraft and General Electric companies, and was Manager of Technical Publications at Singer-Link when he retired in 1986. He worked on the Apollo Project that put the first men on the Moon. During his retirement years, Bill studied sculpture at BU and produced many pieces in wood and in bronze, which he gave away to friends and family members. He also volunteered to drive for Meals-on-Wheels for a number of years, worked in a CHOW pantry and, in later years, served as a Real Choices Counselor for the Office for Aging, assisting the elderly, disabled and handicapped in resolving their problems. Bill and his wife, Ruth, were avid travelers after their sons left home and they visited a great many foreign countries and, after her death, he continued to travel, particularly with his grandchildren. Bill was fortunate enough in his life to know, love and be loved in return by two beautiful, bright, sparkling women. He had 59 years with Ruth and he had a relationship of 6 ½ years with Ms. Libby Goldschmidt, who now resides in Monroe Township, NJ. Both relationships were full of love on both sides. Libby will be greatly missed and Bill died a happy man. Friends and family remember Bill as a kind, caring and compassionate man who gave sound advice when it was most needed.
Like his wife before him, Bill's body will also be cremated and there will be no formal funeral service. Instead, there will be a small private service by the Rabbi Barbara Goldman-Wartell at Temple Concord in Binghamton commemorating his death on Sunday, July 5. An announcement of the memorial service will be made in the newspaper. Donations can be made to one of Bill's favorite charities: CHOW (Community Hunger Outreach Warehouse), 3 Otseningo Street, Binghamton, NY 13903, phone 607-724-9130. Arrangements are with the E.H. Parsons Funeral Home, Inc., 71 Main Street, Binghamton, NY. Ernest H. Parsons

I was very sorry to see that Bill had passed away. He was my boss at Singer Link- just before he retired. He was a wonderful man, and he was very good to me. I would see him from time to time at Hilltop- where my mother is. His vitality and energy amazed me. I have fond memories of Bill, and his red socks! He will always be among my happy memories of my time at Link.
