Ralph Roy Obituary

The Reverend Ralph Lord Roy, age 91, of Southington, entered life eternal on February 3, 2020 at The Hospital of Central Connecticut, New Britain campus.

Pastor Roy was born in St. Albans, VT, raised in the nearby town of Swanton, son of Howard and Olive (Corliss) Roy. He was educated at Mt. Hermon School, Swarthmore College, Columbia University, and Union Theological Seminary. After his ordination as a United Methodist Minister, he served parishes in Harlem and Brooklyn, and, since 1970, in Connecticut. He was a pastor in Clinton, Milford, and Meriden, where he retired in 1994, and then in Thomaston, East Berlin, New Haven, Hartford, and New Canaan. He loved the pastoral ministry and his parishioners, and officiated at hundreds of baptisms, confirmations, weddings, and funerals.

Early in his ministry he wrote three books, taught college courses in religion and philosophy, and was active in the Civil Rights Movement. In 1961 he was jailed as a Freedom Rider in Tallahassee, FL. The following year, while working with Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., he led a 'prayer pilgrimage' to Albany, GA, which resulted in the largest simultaneous incarceration of clergy in American history. He often spoke of his experiences and shared his memories of Dr. King at churches, schools, libraries, and clubs. In December 2002, he was arrested at the United Nations with a group protesting the approaching invasion of Iraq.

Articles by Reverend Roy were published in numerous periodicals, including a regular column for the past 20 years in the Record-Journal. His 'minute messages' were aired on WJMJ, WTIC, and other radio stations. While in Meriden (1979-1994), he had a weekly radio broadcast on WMMW and served for a decade as that city's police chaplain. In December, 2019 Rev. Roy was honored as Pastor Emeritus at The First United Methodist Church, Meriden, where he served for 15 years. He belonged to a variety of organizations over the years, among them Sons of Union Veterans, the French-Canadian Genealogical Society, and Calendar House, Southington's Senior Center. He had an insatiable curiosity, often spoke of his awe for "this mammoth, magnificent, and mysterious universe", traveled extensively in the United States and abroad, watched "Jeopardy" regularly (he tried out twice), was a student of different faiths and dedicated to ecumenism and social justice.

Pastor Roy is survived by his daughter, Joyce Roy, and her husband Raymond DePaola, of Enfield, NH, and a sister, Erma Parker, of South Daytona, FL, a special friend, Joan Bauder, and nine nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his beloved wife, Margaret Finlay Roy, and three brothers, Wayne, Malcolm, and Howard, Jr.

Calling hours will be Friday, Feb. 7th from 4-7 p.m. at DellaVecchia Funeral Home, 211 N. Main St., Southington. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, February 15th at 11 a.m. at the First United Methodist Church, 159 East Main St., Meriden. Burial will be in Swanton, VT, at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, please send contributions to Memorial United Methodist Church, 23 Grand Avenue, Swanton, VT 05488; Grace United Methodist Church, 121 Pleasant Street, Southington, CT 06489; First United Methodist Church, 159 East Main Street, Meriden, Connecticut 06450.

I loved him. He was a wonderful man and a great counselor. Always giving. He baptized both of my girls (Tamara and Jillian King) many, many years ago when I was a member of FUMC in Meriden. I hadn't seen him in ages because I have lived in FL for almost 30 years now. Condolences to his daughter Joy.

I have fond memories of his friendship with my Mom and my own conversations with him. He was such a joy to converse with. He was a world of knowledge. Sometimes I wish I knew him in high school so I could have him as a guest speaker.- Bridge Naamon

Rev. Ralph Roy was a long-time client. I just recently prepared his final batch of radio messages for broadcast and to go online. Truly an inspiring and inspired man of God. His unique perspectives would both inspire and challenge at the same time. He was very much admired and loved, and will be greatly missed!

I truly looked forward to reading his semi-
weekly column in the RJ with his vast knowledge of all the religions of the world along with his
occasional views about local, state, national
and world events and not holding back either..
Hopefully you will now rest in peace and may
God bless you Rev. Ralph..

Reverend Ralph Roy was my pastor at Grace United Methodist Church on the Upper West in NYC. I was a teenager then and it was the first time I truly engaged in examining my beliefs and was encouraged to question religious doctrine. Revered Roy helped me find my voice as I explored religion as well as community and social justice issues. I was inspired by his civil rights work and his activism as a Freedom Fighter. Reverend Roy will always be remembered as a significant influence in my life.

Pastor Ralph Roy was one of the first people I met after moving to Meriden, CT in 1986. I attended the First United Methodist Church one Sunday. The following week, as I was doing laundry, he showed up at my house unannounced. I was a little embarrassed to have a pastor see me in such disarray, but he immediately put me at ease. We later became friends, and I attended the FUM for years. He was a wonderful human being and an inspiration to many.

I'm glad I got to know Ralph. He convened a retired Methodist ministers breakfast that began in the Bristol parsonage and was convened by Ralph in the Southington Denny's. Ralph had a remarkable grasp of our American history and a storied participation in it. What a witness to his faith!

Ralph Lord Roy - My friend, my pastor, my mentor, and my teacher. He has helped to make me a better person than I would have been. He has done courageous, scholarly, and magnificent work throughout his life. Many things he has done, has gone unnoticed by many or forgotten. Those who really knew him are aware of his great deeds and will never forget. He was there during the early struggles for civil rights and justice. I will surely miss him. I am thankful that he was a part of my life.

Dear Joy and family,

It was an honor to know Ralph and be under his pastoral care for so many years. Our wedding, Kristin's baptism, and then his heartfelt kindness when Kristin passed away stay in my mind. His return to Milford and Mary Taylor Memorial UMC for her service could not have been easy, for many reasons. After he left MTM and went to Meriden we had many interactions, usually involving a lively review of current events, the law, and you, the apple of his eye. His grace and strength when your beautiful Mother passed was an example to me which I shall never forget. My sincere condolences. Chris
