Jerome Auclair Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Mar. 18 to Mar. 19, 2021.
Jerome "Jerry" Auclair passed away peacefully at home in New Haven on March 11 after a 20-month battle with pancreatic cancer. Jerry was born in 1945 in Springfield, MA, the second of four children of Alcide and Edna Auclair. He graduated from South Hadley High School in 1963 and from the University of Massachusetts in 1967 with a B.S. in mathematics.

Jerry began an illustrious 52-year career in education at Nonnewaug High School, where he taught math, coached baseball, was athletic director, and eventually assistant principal. In 1972 he was awarded an M.S. in Education, and in 1976, at the young age of 30, he became principal of Somers High School, where he served for 11 years before becoming principal of Southington High School in 1987. He remained at Southington for 15 years, during which time the school was honored as a Blue Ribbon School of Excellence by the United States Department of Education. In 1991 he earned a Ph.D. in education from UConn, and in 1999 the UConn School of Education honored Jerry as Outstanding School Administrator. The final five years of his administrative career Jerry served as principal of Darien High School, during which time he was honored as Connecticut High School Principal of the Year.

For the last 43 years of his career, Jerry was actively involved with CAS-CIAC, the Connecticut Association of Schools & Connecticut Interscholastic Athletic Conference, both of which honored him twice with Distinguished

Service Awards. In 2019 he received their highest honor when he became a Hall of Honor recipient. He was also active with NAASP, the National Association of Secondary School Principals, which named him the winner of the Richard J. Bradly Award for service to the organization.

Jerry served on and chaired many school accreditation committees both in the United States and abroad at international schools. After retiring as a high school principal, Jerry worked for several years at UConn in their UCapp program, training educators to become school administrators. He also served as coach to numerous high school principals in troubled school districts.

A man of immense character with a strong moral compass, Jerry was an avid golfer and a lifelong fan of New England sports, especially the Red Sox and Patriots. But his true love was his family: his wife of the last 30 1/2 years, Tina; his three children and their spouses: Jenn & Jeremy White, Nathan and Kristi Auclair, Holly and Brett Fagan; and his seven grandchildren: Siobhan, Liam, Aidan, Brady, Katie, Avery, and Owen. He is survived by them and his sisters Sandy and Audrey, his brother Doug, his nine nieces and nephews, and by his first wife Paula, the mother of his children.

Due to pandemic restrictions, a memorial service honoring Jerry's life will be scheduled at a later time this spring.

Jerry's final request to colleagues, friends, and family was that in lieu of flowers or charitable donations, please perform a random act of kindness for someone.

He was my High School principal many, many years ago in tiny Somers CT. He was a good man and I have found memories of him.

At that time Somers was transitioning from a agricultural,
rural community. He made a point making sure his students were prepared for college.

Somers was not a wealthy town - yet we all felt we received a great High School education and that education made a difference in life.

I would not be were I am today without that foundation. It started at Somers High School.

Tina, Jerry Farrell just called me about Jerry. I’m very sorry. He was a true gentleman and had a great sense of humor. I always admired his wonderful ability to recall information for just about anything. I always enjoyed playing golf with him. He always had some great stories and jokes. His knowledge of the Red Sox and Patriots was extremely interesting. He always talked about his family and how proud he was of everyone. He was a wonderful friend and I will really miss him, as will everyone who knew him. His final request is typical of who he was.

He always supported me in every way including coming to games and encouraging me by name.....his support was always appreciated.....the amazing part about Jerry is he never forgot you....I moved on to coach at Trumbull HS and one day at a game I heard a voice encouraging me from the stands....it was Jerry who came to see me and say hello....that’s the kind of man he was.....I loved him and will pray for him....God Bless You, Jerry....

Jerry. Good fight my friend. We met in Junior high school in 1956-57. You came from the Plains", me "Woodlawn". Became instant friends. Odd
You were Catholic, I was Protestant.
You loved the Red Sox, I loved the yankees.
You excelled in math, I didn't.
From that point on we seemed to be inseparable, and along with Artie and Rick..a fun group of young lads who really cared about each other and always had each others backs.
Poker games, nickel dime, draw one. Your famous whiffle ball field. Always a Red Sox pitcher on the mound..me always Micky Mantle at bat.

I have a picture of the four of us in graduation gowns the morning of the big day in 1963. Big smiles, each one of us ready to beat the world.

Rick went into the military, Artie to AIC, and you to Umass. each off to different dreams and hopes.

I will never forget you coming up to the Holyoke Hospital at midnight, to sit with me, waiting for Kim's birth...you were the only one to visit.

Few more years later I moved on to Chicago and you to education.

Too many moves, we lost track, and for that I am sorry.
From ready your obit, you did good Jerry..very good

Next week you should do lunch with Tom Yawky and maybe Steinbrenner...give em hell

rest in peace my friend

Jerry was a friend, a colleague, a mentor. I was privileged to know him as the principal of Darien High. He guided the community through the building of a new high school and guided me as a rookie athletic director hired to lead one of the largest and most successful athletic programs in the state. We talked Red Sox, Patriots and school issues daily. I will miss his smile and good judgement
