I knew Mark at the University of Illinois. He was in my class. One of the brightest.. One other class member and I were wondering who else was alive in our class. I was stunned to find Mark in obituaries. He was always so vibrant. If family sees this, I send my deepest belated condolences.

I am deeply saddened by the loss of a such a stellar researcher, as well as an amazing human being who touched the lives of so many people, both professionally and personally. I was honored to have met Mark back in the early 90s when I was working in the Administration for Children and Families, overseeing national Head Start studies. As a nationally recognized early childhood research expert, his stellar technical input and insights helped to inform and improve a number of our major national Head Start studies, as well as countless other policy relevant studies of child care over his long and impressive career. However, while he was one of the leading early childhood researcher in the country based on his important and impressive research work, I think that some of his greatest contributions may have come from his unique and warm personality and genuine commitment to others, not only his other research colleagues, but also his strong commitment to supporting young emerging scholars. I feel particularly privileged to have developed not only a strong professional working relationship with Mark, but also a personal relationship that transcended the various research activities that we collaborated on over the past 25 years. It was within the context of the personal side of our relationship that I was able to experience perhaps his greatest gifts of sharing his heart felt warmth and support for the next generation of emerging researchers. He was always willing to give his time and energy to support the work of others.
During his time at UCSD, I had referred a Latino postdoc to him, as I told the postdoc that of the different options he was considering at the time, I told him that in my opinion Mark would provide by far the strongest training in advanced statistics that would undoubtedly help him in his career for years to come. I still recall a subsequent phone call with Mark, when he could barely contain his genuine excitement and enthusiasm about his efforts to completely immerse himself into the work of the postdoc and how excited he was to try and embrace and truly understand the culturally and linguistically responsive issues that the scholar was interested in studying. I think it was that level of selfless giving that I think best defined Mark and his contributions to the field, countless young researchers, and to humanity as a whole. My heart goes out to his family for their loss, as I know this has to be an incredibly difficult time. For me, I take solace in knowing that I was incredibly blessed to have had the honor of working with such an amazing person who was such a valued colleague and friend. Mark, you will be missed by so many people!
