Richard Sandoval Obituary

Richard C. Sandoval On May 13, Ricardo Cresencio Sandoval moved on to a never-ending party under the New Mexico sun with tequila, classic cars, ravens, his dad and brother, and assorted departed cats and dogs. He was a son, brother, father, an artist and a great example of how to live a full life. His memory will be cherished. Richard was born in Nambe to a family whose northern New Mexico roots reach back more than 400 years. He graduated from UNM and enjoyed a long career as an art director and editor at New Mexico Magazine. After retiring, the unofficial Mayor of Santa Fe spent time painting, carving, playing tennis, hanging out at his favorite bars and restaurants, and driving his classic '53 Chevy. His father, Jose Sandoval, and brother Ben Sandoval preceded him in death. He leaves behind his daughter Emiliana Sandoval and her husband, Steve Byrne; daughter Maria Sandoval and her husband, Russ Nordstedt; granddaughter Riley; mother Teresita Maria Sandoval; sister Ruth Jiron and her husband, Arthur Jiron; sister Marcella Sandoval and her partner, Cynthia Wright; and brother Daniel Sandoval and his wife, Lorraine, and many nieces and nephews. Visitation will be at 6 p.m. May 17 with a rosary at 7 p.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Nambe. The funeral mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. May 18 at Sacred Heart, with a reception to follow at Sangre de Cristo Racquet Club in Santa Fe. His tennis buddies are invited to bring a racket and hit a few balls in his honor. His family will be establishing an art scholarship in his name at UNM.

God bless and keep you and prayers to your family.
I have a 22 x 35 pen drawing of a hypo done by Richard C Sandoval in 1972. It was a gift to my then husband Peter B Barker. Richard was married at that time to Winky, Emiiana's mother. I am about to have this wonderful drawing framed and started doing research on where Richard was. I was saddened to read of his death in 2012 but am trying to find Emiliana's information so that I might send a photo of this wonderful Hypo done by her father. Peter and I lived in Galisteo for a brief time during the early 1970's. My email address is [email protected]. I live in Fort Lauderdale, Fl, 4737 North Ocean Drive, Lauderdale By The Sea, FL 33308. My best wishes to Richard's family, especially his two daughters and mother. I was behind him by 3 or 4 yrs in Pojoaque and remember him as a basketball star there. We played tennis together a few times later after we both had taken up tennis...Handsome,talented and a great guy,we won't forget him.

Too soon, too soon! We talked last week and planned to get together this week -- but not this way.
Richard and I have known each other for about 40 years, first as co-workers and always as friends. He was like one of my sons. He was enormously talented, of course -- his paintings have hung on our walls for years. But more than that, he was a diligent and cooperative worker, a proud, loving father, a devoted son and brother, a joyful grandfather, a loyal friend, and above all, a good man. May God hold him close forever, and give peace to his grief-stricken family.

My heart-felt condolences to Emiliana and Maria, especially, and to Richard's family as a whole. Richard and I became friends in school at age 6, were best friends through our years together at church and school, and remained friends ever since; my sense of loss is profound. Although our professions took us down different paths, the qualities I value and most esteem today reflect qualities Richard played a large role in shaping. Richard's life embodied all that anyone can aspire to. Bye for now, deer friend.

Rchard, it is so sad to read of your passing. May the Good Lord hold you close to his heart. I remember the days when we worked on Washington St, you for the New Mexico Magazine and me for the Department of Banking as these state offices were called at that time. Your art work is beyond comparison. I remember we used to have a lot of fun just being ourselves along with the guys in your mailing department. My deepest sympathies to your family and friends. May you rest in peace.

What a tremendous loss to family and friends and the art community. Richard worked for my father who was an owner of Starline Printing... He was loved and respected as a graphic artist as well as a fine artist. He taught me many of the tricks I use to this day for watercolor painting. Prayers for the family and I can't wait to see Richard's paintings where he is now.

My heart goes out to Maria and Emily for their tremendous loss. Richard has left an indelible mark on Santa Fe and all who knew him. I will never forget all the fun times we've shared. He influenced my daughter to study art at UNM and has been a dear friend. I will miss him so much.
