Dorothy Lockard Obituary

Dorothy Ellen Judge Lockard

1928-2016

Dorothy Ellen Judge was born on October 27, 1928 in Elmira, New York, the youngest of the four children of John Walter Judge and Ruth Ellen Roberts.
In June 2016, Dorothy declined sharply in strength. She passed away peacefully on June 28, 2016, at her son's house in San Rafael, California.

"Dottie" grew up in Elmira, and moved to Tucson, AZ in 1950. There her daughter Rita was born in 1951. She married Kirby Lockard in 1956, and they had two sons, Scott and Brodie. During 1961-62 the family lived in Boston, where Dottie volunteered in the ER of Mount Auburn Hospital, beginning a long, distinguished nursing career.

Dorothy earned her nursing degree in 1971, and her Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology in 1977. She taught nursing at the University of Arizona before moving to the Veteran's Administration as a nursing administrator. She later transferred to San Diego, and then Portland.

In 1979, her son Brodie suffered a severe accident while at Stanford.
Dorothy spent the next year between Portland and the Bay Area, assuring the best care and outcome for him. She transferred to Palo Alto, and she and Brodie eventually moved to Redwood City. She remained at the Palo Alto VA until her retirement in 2009 as Associate Chief Nurse. Brodie moved to Hawai'i in 2000 and Dorothy visited often. In 2013, she relocated to Scott and his wife Nancy's house north of San Francisco.

Dorothy was a loving mother, devoted to unwavering support of her children, with a particular emphasis on their education. She will always be remembered as a loving, smart, determined, and empathetic friend, mother, and grandmother. She is survived by her brother Donald, her three children, grandchildren Gina, Brian, Brodie and Kendra, and great-grandchildren Martin, Houston and Zella.
