Sylvia Hunt Walker of Jackson, Mississippi passed away Monday morning January 14, 2019 at Huntsville Hospital Hospice Family Care in Huntsville, Alabama. She was 80 years of age. Funeral services were held at First Baptist Church of Huntsville on Thursday, January 17, 2019, with Dr. Travis Collins officiating. She was interred at Maple Hill Cemetery in Huntsville. A Celebration of Life memorial will be held at Galloway United Methodist Church in Jackson, Mississippi on Monday, January 28, 2019 at 11:00 a.m. under the direction of Rev. Cary Stockett. Visitation will begin at 9:00 a.m. preceding the service.
Mrs. Walker was the daughter of Jack and Sadie Hunt of Sturgis, Mississippi. Surviving her death are her devoted husband of fifty-seven years, Dr. Billy Walker; her two children, Emily (Will) Cook of Madison, Alabama and Lake (Tammy) Walker of Jackson, Mississippi; her four grandchildren: Jackson William Cook, Sarah Grace Cook, and Davis Walker Cook of Madison, Alabama and John Richard (Amanda) Walker of Jackson, Mississippi; and her sister, Majel (Jesse) Dean of Osyka, Mississippi.
Mrs. Walker graduated in 1956 from Sturgis High School as valedictorian of her class. She received a B.S. degree in Chemistry from Mississippi State University and served as Chief Technologist of the University of Mississippi Medical School Laboratory before choosing to devote her life fully to serving her family and community. She was a Master Gardner, served as President of the Mississippi State Medical Auxiliary, held local, regional, and national leadership positions with the National Association of Junior Auxiliaries, was a long time docent in the Mississippi Governor's Mansion, and an officer in the Ralph Humphries Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution.
