Dr. Stanley M. Vogel
Dr. Stanley M. Vogel, 97, died Friday, May 11, 2018 at his home in Westport, CT.
He was born January 21, 1921 in Norwalk to the late Betty Jacobson Vogel and Morris Vogel. Stanley graduated from Norwalk High School in 1938, where he was voted the most brilliant member of his class and most likely to succeed. He received a full four-year scholarship to New York University where he was elected to Phi Beta Kappa Society. He was then awarded a fellowship to Yale but his studies were interrupted to serve in the intelligence branch of the armed forces during WWII. After completing his masters and Ph.D. degrees at Yale, he did post graduate work at Harvard and Oxford University in England.

He was predeceased by his parents and three sisters – Dr. Florence Vogel Shankman, Edith Vogel Dworkin (former Tracy School Principal) and Sylvia Vogel Halpern. He was also predeceased by a niece, Marcia Halpern Ives.
After teaching at Princeton University, Dr. Vogel joined the faculty of Suffolk University in Boston, MA. He was employed there for thirty seven years, eventually becoming the chairman of the English department.
He was the author of fourteen books about English and American Literature.
He returned to Connecticut in 1995 to be closer to his family. He volunteered for many years at the Norwalk Museum and Lockwood Mathews Mansion Museum. He also was a member of Friends of the Norwalk Library.
Dr. Vogel was an avid book and antique collector, a photographer and an insatiable traveler, spending most summers on trips to Europe, Asia, South America and much of North America.
He leaves behind many loving nieces and nephews including Susan Shankman Semchuk (Myron), Jeanne Dworkin Schwartz (Stephen), Martin Shankman (Phyllis Eldridge), Robert Shankman, and Arthur Halpern. Great nieces and nephews include Leah Shankman Aizen (Ron), Dr. Stewart Shankman (Alexandra), Vincent Ives Jr. (Katy), Marianne Semchuk (Anthony Danler) and Anne Marie Semchuk (Eddie Donnelly). He also leaves six great – great nieces and nephews and many cousins.
A graveside service will be held on Monday, May 14, at 11:00 AM at Independent Hebrew Society Cemetery on Richards Avenue. In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations be made to the Friends of the Norwalk Library or a charity of your choice.

Doctor Vogel was my English professor at Suffolk University. Outstanding man!

Dr. Vogel taught Shakespeare courses at Suffolk University in Boston almost 50 years ago. As his student, I appreciated his scholarship, his understanding of Shakespeare's world and poetry. Still, it took me many years of growing up to fully realize what a gift we had in Dr. Vogel's expertise and his good cheer as a teacher. I miss him.

Dear Shankman / Vogel families: We are very sad to learn of Stanley's passing. He was very part of an influentional family during our growing up in Norwalk. Our first princapal at a Norwalk Public school was Edith Vogel; our friendship grew to include the Shankman family. It does not get any better than this. Our prayers, love and thought are with you during this difficult time.
