Kasson Crooker Obituary

Crooker, Kasson E.

Kasson E. Crooker of 8281 Main St., Interlaken, NY, passed away in the early morning hours of Thursday, February 7, 2013. Born June 3, 1943 in Erie, PA, Kasson was the son of Kasson W. and Mary K. Crooker. He lived in Waterford, PA where he attended elementary school and high school, graduating from Fort LeBoeuf High School in 1961. He received his B.A. in Music from Westminster Choir College in Princeton, NJ, in 1965. He married Marilyn E. Young on August 28, 1965, and they settled in Livingston, NJ. In 1966 Kass received a fellowship grant to study orchestra management and was placed with the Phoenix Symphony, where he spent a year as management apprentice. He continued with the Phoenix Symphony for ten years as their orchestra manager. His son, Kasson D. and daughter, Heidi E. were born in Phoenix in 1972 and 1974 respectively. The family moved to Columbus, OH, in 1976 where Kass became the manager of the Columbus Symphony. In 1979, Kass was hired to direct a new performing arts center at Lorain County Community College in Elyria, OH. From its inception, Kass developed and oversaw multiple performing arts series at the Stocker Arts Center ranging from national touring shows, dance, music, local arts performances, and a stellar children's series, bringing outstanding arts programming to Lorain County. Over the course of his 26 year career, he brought his love of the arts to thousands of audience members. He always believed that he was in the "magic business." Beyond his career, Kass was devoted to his family and was the central member of a large extended family in and around the Finger Lakes. He kept everyone informed of family events and strengthened everyone's bonds with Cayuga Lake and the generations who came before and will come after. He loved living by the lake in the summer at his cottage and hosting friends and family, driving his boat, sailing, camp fires on the beach, and his projects that kept him rooted to the land and his heritage. He loved New York state history, especially the Erie Canal; he was an active member in the Canal Society of New York State and several local historical societies. Over the course of his life, he attended thousands of concerts, plays, and dance performances wherever he traveled and lived. He loved to seek out new adventures in his life, always taking the back roads, the out-of-the-way route, and the longest way home. His hugs, his laugh, his spirit and optimism touched so many lives. Kass is survived by his devoted and loving wife of 48 years, Marilyn (nee Young) of Interlaken, NY; sister Johanna Lyman of Concord, OH; brother-in-law Robert Young of Tunkhannock, PA; son Kasson Duncan (Sonja Crooker) of Arlington, MA; daughter Heidi Crooker Nathanielsz (David W. Nathanielsz) of Delmar; grandchildren, Oliver and Graham Nathanielsz; nieces, nephews, cousins, as well as hundreds of friends from all over the United States. Kass was preceded in death by his father, Kasson W. in 1954 and mother, Mary King Crooker in 1991. Calling hours are on Sunday, February 10th from 2-5 p.m. at Ness-Sibley Funeral Home, 23 South St., Trumansburg, NY. A funeral service will be Monday, February 11th at 1:00 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church of Ulysses, 69 E. Main St., Trumansburg, NY. A short reception will follow the service at the church. Burial will be private. Donations can be made to the Cancer Resource Center in Ithaca, NY, the Canal Society of New York State, or a charity of your choice. Dearest Marilyn and family, I have missed my dear friend for almost a year, and yet……he has been so close: in my thoughts always. The anniversary of our last wonderful dinner together at your home just passed, but the lovely moments of sharing our friendship, food, drink and music are still savored and embraced. Marilyn, you are doing just what Kass would have wanted you to do: LIVE with GUSTO! Keep moving forward, my friend. You deserve every moment of joy that comes your way! I am always, your friend, with love, Kat

His loving family, all of his friends, the arts, and the world have lost a caring, warm and gentle soul.
Our loss is Heaven's gain. There is a new star in the sky.
Kass is not gone. His light will always shine in the eyes of his children, grandchildren and in the thousands of people that were enriched by the arts he presented in a world that saw too few bright lights.
He will be missed.
And always remembered.

Marilyn, Heidi, David and Family: Your sharing of Kass' love of music, and stone, and life was amazing. The "Giant" man in Dan's eulogy, and builder of walls by Heidi were so poignant and inspirational. The entire Celebration of his life was extraordinary. You exceeded your goal of "singing" him off to heaven. God Bless you all. Bill Shaw

Words can't even begin to express the loss that came with this amazing man's passing. He was always full of such positive energy, making the world around him a happier place, full of love and laughter. He was my second dad, making me feel like part of the family, even if years had passed since we had last seen each other. I know what a rock he was to the Coorker family, and I wish you all his continued strength, even invisible as it is. He will live in my heart forever. Love to all.

I fondly remember Kass from my years working with him before I retired from the Ohio Arts Council. We roomed together many times in Ohio and around the country. A better friend I will never have. Nor was there anyone more devoted to the arts in Ohio who had the abilities, courage and perseverance to make things happen. He will be missed.

Marilyn, Kasson D, and Heidi,
Jim and I are so sad to hear of Kass's passing. You know better than the rest of us what a delightful, caring, sensitive, determined and humorous man he was. But I do want to tell you how much Kass meant to us! Kass was genuinely interested in others, he always made us feel welcome and important. He could make everyone in a room feel like the guest of honor. He simply let people know that they were each special. I'm sure you each have an ocean of special and wonderful memories of times spent with Kass. We hope they will bring you comfort and healing as you deal with your loss. Jim joins me in sending our most sincere condolences.

I will always remember the man who cheerfully made pancakes on the deck of the cottage with his white headband. Despite the many years that have passed since the last time I saw him, I have never forgotten his warmth and humor and how he always made me feel like part of the family whenever I was around. My thoughts and love are with all of the Crooker family.
