Helen Cox Obituary

HELEN
CATALAND COX

TALLAHASSEE - Beloved mother, grandmother and artist, Helen Cataland Cox, fell asleep in the Lord on January 8, 2021 in Tallahassee, Florida. A native of Youngstown, Ohio and a longtime resident of Winter Haven, Florida, she spent her last six years in Tallahassee living with her daughter Marilyn.
She met her husband Dr. David Cox while working as a medical records librarian in Youngstown Ohio. They married on August 19, 1956 and as she said 'we didn't take a honeymoon, we moved to Florida.' A mother and wife first and foremost, when her two children became of school age, Helen renewed her interest in art. She joined the Ridge Art Association and formally pursued a degree in art education and graduated from the University of South Florida in 1974. Helen was viewed as an artist with a great flair for color and exhibited her artwork in juried competition shows throughout Florida. She was a former president of the Ridge Art Association, member of the Florida Artists Group, a founding member of the Planters Garden Club and a member of P.E.O.
Helen had a zest for life and was happiest when she was around her family. She always seemed to have an elegant beauty about her. Even when Helen wasn't expressly making art, there was an artist's sensibility to her everyday activities.
Helen is survived by her daughter Dr. Marilyn M. Cox (James LeVan) of Tallahassee, son David J. Cox III of Jacksonville, granddaughter Ruthelen E. Cox, of Jacksonville, and grandsons David J. Cox IV (Amy) of Jacksonville, and Marc D. LeVan, of Atlanta, GA. Helen was preceded in death by her loving husband Dr. David J. Cox Jr. (37 years), and brothers James A. Cataland and Ronald J. Cataland.
The family would like to acknowledge the love and care shown to Helen during the past six years in Tallahassee by Patricia Duque (and daughters Pamela and Paulina), Andrea Tunnicliff, Penny Davis and Nandy Mertil.
In lieu of flowers, please consider a contribution to the St. Francis Wildlife Association, Quincy, Florida or to a charity of your choice in her honor. Secondary to the pandemic, a private service will be held at the Holy Mother of God Greek Orthodox Church. Interment will be at Rolling Hills Cemetery, Winter Haven, Florida, later this month. Arrangements are by Bevis Funeral Home, Tallahassee, Florida.

Mrs. Cox was the nicest, kindest person I have ever met. It always warmed your heart to be around her. She always made me feel welcome in her home as a youngster and always wanted to see my children when we later visited my mother next door. We miss her greatly.

I have known Helen (at the time, "Mrs. Cox,") and Dr. Cox and David and Marilyn for over 40 years. They were our neighbors on Lake Florence in Winter Haven. I was 12 years old when I first met them. Helen and my mother, Jeanette, continued to live across the street from each other, after all of the children had left, until Helen moved to Tallahassee. Helen and Jeanette had a grand time together, keeping each other company and enjoying life. Helen was one of the most kind and beautiful individuals I have ever met in my life. She was so elegent and gracious. I have two of her paintings in my home. They are beautiful and colorful and remind me of her everyday that I look at them. I will fondly think of Helen forever as a goddess among humans.

She was a wonderful woman! I have some many fantastic and funny memories of her. It was a privilege to be able to help take care of her and know her. I love her so much and was so lucky to have her in my life. She loved her family so much and was so proud of all of you. She always bragged about how great y’all are! I am sending so much love your way.
