Clint Wright Obituary

DR. CLINT WRIGHT, 54 School Superintendent WINTER HAVEN - Dr. Clint Wright, age 54, charter school superintendent, passed away from a heart attack Friday, April 20, 2007. Dr. Clinton Wright-"May the life he lived Speak for him." It's been said that each life is like a book, lived one chapter at a time. Clint has lived his life to the fullest and in such a way that we can all learn from this great man. I thank God for the lives he has touched the service he has given and the humor he has spread among so many. It's amazing how time passes so quickly and many of us miss our purpose. I really feel that Clinton Wright fulfilled his purpose unselfishly. He was first a husband, father, deacon, teacher, assistant principal, principal, Sunday school teacher, Children's Church Worker, Rotarian, Omega, Assistant Superintendent, Adjunct Professor, and School Superintendent. He loved his family, Debra S. Wright - wife, Debra LaToya- daughter, Ashlee Maree-daughter, and Kubek-son in law. Along with his immediate family were his brothers and sisters which he shared on numerous occasions times of reminiscing and story telling that were a special part of the Wright - Chapple clan. He had a special relationship of love and commitment with his older brother Sam. Clint loved Sam unconditionally and loved his sister-law Bernadette for her dedication in providing care to his mother in her latter years in Gordon-Heights. Family was very important to him. He could motivate you and talk you into agreeing to almost anything. He could have been a salesman. But most of all he loved people. He spent many hours talking to people, laughing and just enjoying the company of people. We all just knew we had to share him with everyone. Actually which led him to those special times when he would go fishing. Dr. Wright loved to fish and talk boasting many times about the number of fish caught. We were never sure if he did not stop somewhere and buy fish before he came home and said he caught them. His great love for people led him into a career that exceeded far beyond what any earthly person would imagine. He served as a catalyst and mentor for many administrators. "It was all for the children." His awards are numerous, but to name a few Dr. Wright was named Florida High School Principal of the Year, Boss of the Year by the American Business Women's Association, Listed in the "Who's Who Among Colleges and Universities", has been the recipient of the National Association for Colored People's Beacon Award, Lucy DuCharme Humanitarian Award, and finalist for the Ida S. Baker Distinguished Minority Educator, received the "Heart of our Hearts" award for "Educational Leadership to Women" and the Martin Luther King 2006 "Living Legacy Award" for his commitment to diversity, education, political activism and his educational leadership. He was a faithful deacon at Greater St. Paul Baptist Church where he married Debra. He moved away for one year and upon his return relocated in Winter Haven, Florida. He is currently a member of Cornerstone True Fellowship Church, Mammoth Grove, Fl. He loved music, fishing, food, and family. He will be missed but he held true to this quote by Jackie Robinson, "A man's life is not worth living unless he's impacted the lives of others." He was Luther Vandross's lyrical "BAD BOY." The public viewing will be held on Wednesday, April 25th at 9:00am-10:45am at Victory Church located at 1401 Griffin Road, Lakeland. The Home Going Celebration will be held immediately following the viewing at 11:00am. Funeral services are entrusted to Coney Brothers Funeral Home in Lakeland. The family has requested that in lieu of flowers that individuals kindly donate to the Clint Wright Memorial Scholarship Fund. A memorial will be set up in the lobby to accept donations.

I was very saddened by the death of a very close friend, and confidant,Mr. Wright, I spoke to him for the last time about a year before his death, his daughter had been hired on as the director of the community outreach program at my church Word Alive Ministries. and of course when he sees me I hear my full name called out in it's entirety, followed by a big warm embrace, as the coversation started we began to talk about the old days at KJHS, and he says you know Kim, your class was my second year class I had ever taught he says I was 22 years old, and had only been out of college a year, he says I have been in the school system for over 35 years and he said he enjoyed every bit of it, I will cherish that last conversation with Mr. Wright. I did attend the funeral to pay my last respects, and for you all who did not get a chance to attend the funeral, It was just as you probably would have imagined, you would have thought the president had died, an awesome farewell, goddbye my president Mr. Wright I will never let your name die. condolences to Mrs.Wright and family

Today is Dr. King's holiday. When I think of a person who best shows , lived, Dr. King's philosophy; I think of Dr. Clint Wright. He was a dear friend to my husband, myself and thousands more. I'll never forget the time he spoke at Jason Carter's funeral( a white , blond young man, who was killed in a tragic accident , while serving in the military) Clint called him his "son". Clint had/has so many sons and daughters. He helped our son during a difficult time.
The last time we saw Clint was at my husband's mother's funeral.Clint was there sharing his time and love of people. The human condition was his calling as it was Dr.King's.
I will miss both men for the rest of my life but I will try to live as they have taught me.
I know that we are better people because of "angels" , Dr. Martin Luther King,Jr. and Dr. Clinton Wright.

I am shocked and saddened by the passing of Dr.Wright. I grew up not eight houses up from Dr.Wright. He has always been a man of great courage and leadership. He will live on as a shining example of what true dedication can really accomplish. I will never forget him.

I remember Mr. Wright from my days at Kathleen Junior High. He was one of the reasons I went into the field of education. I have traveled to many places and never have I met a man like Mr. Wright. I am currently living and teaching in England. When I heard the news that Mr. Wright had passed away I wept as if he was one of my family members. I will never forget Mr. Wright and feel very privileged to of known such a wonderful man. He will me missed not only by Lake Wales and Polk County, but by all his past students that have sense moved from Florida. My thoughts and prayers are with his family. May they take some comfort in the fact that his lessons in life live on in those he taught.

There are no words to describe Mr. Clint Wright, he was one of a kind. He always knew my name no matter where we happen to see each other. He was my teacher at KJHS in the 70's, I feel privileged have know such a wonderful man, he was also my daughters principal at KHS, and I remember going to all the football games as she was a cheerleader and Mr. Wright would always do "the tootsie roll" with the girls. Dr. Wright along with Coach Joe were like fathers to me since my father was not around. My senior year (c/o 92) was there first year together and was exactly what I needed in my life. It was because of his compassion and understanding that I realized, How important it was to take control of my destiny and not become a statistic. I was truly an honor to have known such a great man.

DR. WRIGHT AND FAMILY,I JUST WANT TO SHARE SOME THOUGHTS ABOUT A GREAT MAN ,DR. WRIGHT HELPED ME IN A TIME WHEN I WAS DOWN AND OUT,SCARED AND CONFUSED I WAS PREGNANT @ KATHLEEN HIGH IN 1996 WHEN I WOULD GET SICK I WOULD SKIP CLASS AND THROW UP IN THE BATH ROOM DURING CLASSES, ONE DAY DR. WRIGHT CAUGHT ME.I FELT LIKE I COULD TALK TO HIM ABOUT ANYTHING AND I BARELY KNEW HIM.I TOLD HIM THAT I WAS PREGNANT AND STILL HIDING IT FROM MY PARENTS AND FAMILY,I WAS TERRIFIED FOR THEM TO FIND OUT,BECAUSE MY PARENTS WERE SO STRICT.HE BASICALLY TOLD ME THAT I CANT GET ANY SPECIAL PRIVILIGES AT THIS SCHOOL AND THAT I NEED TO TELL MY PARENTS CAUSE EVENTUALLY THEY ARE GONNA FIND OUT AND IT WONT BE THE WAY I THINK. ALTHOUGH I KNEW IT WAS GONNA BE BAD.HE SUGGESTED THAT I TELL THEM AND GO TO LAKELAND TEEN PARENT SO THAT MY GRADES WOULD NOT BE AFFECTED.OF COURSE I STILL DIDNT TELL,BUT I DAY I WAS IN CLASS AND ALL OF A SUDDEN I WAS CALLED TO THE OFFICE . AT THIS POINT I AM THINKING WHAT DID I DO THIS TIME,SO WHEN I WALKED IN DR. WRIGHTS OFFICE GUESS WHO WAS THERE , MY PARENTS!.MY HEART JUST DROPPED IT WAS NO MORE HIDING.IT WAS VERY HARD BUT I WAS NOT MAD AT HIM I WAS JUST MORE RELIEVED MORE THEN ANYTHING.A BURDEN HAD BEEN LIFTED OFF MY SHOULDERS.HE DID WHAT WAS IN MY BEST INTEREST AND HE DIDNT EVEN KNOW ME AND I THANK HIM FOR THAT AND WILL ALWAYS REMEMBER HIM,WHETHER YOU LIKED IT OR NOT HE ALWAYS SHOWED HE CARED FOR EVERYONE EVEN A STRANGER.THANK YOU FOR SHARING SUCH A WONDERFUL HUMAN BEING WITH EVERYONE AND MAY GOD BLESS YOU ALL!!

Clint, A teacher's teacher---lover of humanity, comic genius, keeper of the faith, friend, peacemaker, motivator, visionary, children's advocate, educator---those are just small descriptions of the man I knew and served with on panels and committes---if we could all take just a small part of his love of people, work, dedication and love of God, we too, could change the world as did Clint. On the wings of eagles Clint was carried home---blessings of love and life to his family and friends.

To the Wright family in their time of sorrow,

What can I say that has not already been said by so many who loved Dr. Wright, as I did. He was a teacher, a friend, a surrogate father, and I will always remember him fondly. He was the best kind of role model and the memories I have of him and his entire family will stay with me and bring a smile to my face for a lifetime. Toy, my sister, if you get around to reading this entry know that you have never left my thoughts in all these years and now more than ever I want you to know that you've got a friend.

With love,

Gone but Never Forgotten!!! What can I say that has not been mention already? I had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Wright way back in the late 1970's as my Social Studies teacher at Kathleen Jr. High, he was more than a teacher, he was my friend. I used to stay in his room after school just to talk to him and ask for his advice about anything and everything. He would always have the right words to say to me, and I always left a better person than when I came in. He would tell me to never give up on my dreams, and to never settle for less than what I could really achieve. Those are lessons that I have passed down to my kids. He was there for my mother when she decided to go back to school for her diploma, always encouraging her to never give up and telling her that she could make it. Even after 28+ years, he still remembered me when I saw him and always asked about my family. My children had the pleasure of meeting him on several occasions and were amazed that he still could remember me and the times we had back at old KJHS. Polk County has truly lost one of the Best!!!! (We are hard pressed on every side, but not crushed; perplexed, but not in despair; persecuted, but not abandoned; struck down, but not destroyed;), if each one of us could carry on just one thing that Mr. Wright taught us and keep God close to our hearts, this world will be a better place. Heaven's doors were wide open when Mr. Wright went "dancing" in and this time God called him by name. My deepest condolences to his family, my prayers will be with you.

I love you, Mr Wright!!!!

Mrs. Wright,
Clint had such an influence on people. I met Clint while I was a teacher at Blake Elementary. He gathered all of us teachers together before school started and had us sing "I believe I can fly" and used this as an inspirational song to motivate us. I took this song and used it for years to inspire my own students. I was recently married and my students surprised me by playing this song at my reception. I thought of where it all began with Mr. Wright. He has influenced me as a teacher and now as a principal. He will always hold a special place in my heart. God bless you and your family.

he is a man that has changed my life in so many ways. to begin with he was my high school principal amd friend. He taught me that getting involved with all of the wrong individuals that I did was not worth my life and my education. When I walked across the stage to recieve my diploma, he said to me I am so proud of you. You made it!!!!!. I cried. I never thought that I would reach that day and here I am with a college degree and in the medical profession for 10 yr. THANK YOU FOR SAVING A LIFE.

We have lost one of the greatest Men ever! Mr Wright, always knew how to make you smile even when he was down about something. I remember walking to class and passing him in the hallway, I asked " Mr Wright are you doing ok " He responded by saying, "Yes Nichols just hurting inside for some students...but, the Lord is going to take care of them." He prayed for everyone around him. I have never met anyone like him.
Mrs Wright I am praying for your family during this time and the days ahead. At my Mom's funeral Mr Wright looked at me and said " Baby, you are going to be ok...the Lord is going to look after you." So I say that to you all during this time. The Lord is going to be there every step of the way. May His Grace abound to each of you!

We met Clint after moving into Buckingham in 1990. As an educator myself in Maryland, I found Clint very interesting to talk to. I believe he told me he was 37 at the time and that he would be Superintendent of POlk County. I really hoped he would become the Superintendent. I had hoped the Board of Education in Polk County would see what a great job he would do. As a Christian, I am sure he is enjoying even more now as he meets the King of Kings and the Lord of Lords. I know that we will meet again, but I can tell you we are saddened by this untimely death. We ask God to Bless the family as they trust in Him. May His loving arms comfort you all.

To the Wright family,
May you find comfort in knowing how Dr. Wright touched so many lives. I graduated from Kathleen High School in 1993, and I have the fondest memories of him and his school spirit. I recently used him as an example when I was asked to describe my mentor. My heart is with you all, and I hope you understand how much he will always be with all of us.

Unfortunately, I did not have the opportunity of being taught by Mr. Wright, but I did have the opportunity to hear him speak at the John L. Sanders Boys and Gilrs club in Lakeland, FL at a banquet for the children. From that point on, I knew that he was a special person, role model and inspirational speaker. He will be truly missed.

To the Wright Family,

Clint and I were classmates at Bartow High School. He was the guy who made everyone feel so very special and I will never forget him. The service on Wednesday was a beautiful tribute of Clint's life, what a difference he made in the lives of so many people! We will all miss him dearly but knowing the Clint is with Jesus gives us all great comfort may time, faith and sweet memories ease our grief.

The name Mr. Wright brought smiles and laughter to a face instantly. A true loving, honest, real soul that's unlike anyone you ever knew or will ever know. If you seen him in a crowd and was running 10 minutes late - you still waited for the circle around him to clear just to hear him call you by name, get a big hug, and to fill him in on how yourself and the whole family were doing.
Mr. Wright - You will always be loved and never forgotten. Thank you for being a part of my life.

Many thanks to Debra for sharing Clint with the community. Mr. "Right", as we sometimes called him at Kathleen Jr High, gave his all to the advancement of education. He never backed off if he thought a student needed a "sermon"....and he could give some good ones. He changed the life of many students, both educational and spiritual.
We appreciated and loved him very much.

To the Wright Family I extend my deepest condolences. I was the one who stood on the bridge on Bartow Highway holding the sign telling Clint "we will miss you" as tears rolled down my face. The acknowledgment of my presence by people in the procession waving and honking their horns was a very uplifting feeling. I have had many good encounters with this man while my daughter attended KHS class of 98 (and since at KHS football games) and as others have stated, he never forgot a name. Clint Wright is and was one of the greatest men who walked this earth. Even though it is a tremendous loss for us here on earth, it is an enormous gain for Heaven. Clint may be gone but he will NEVER be forgotten. I'm sure God has "BIG" plans for the man with a “BIG” heart. God Bless the entire family.

Debra, Toya and Ashlee,

Our hearts were saddened when we were informed of Clint's death. We could only reflect back on the great conversations he had shared with us. We know your hearts are heavy at this time, but realize that GOD is in control of all situations and he is too wise to make a mistake and too just to do wrong. We love you all and will miss Clint and that great personality.

I know tht it probably doesn't mean much coming from a complete stranger but I do know that both Sam and Clint Wright are what todays youth should aspire to be. I only knew Mr. Wright breifly as a teacher and mentor. I can't say how sorry I am that a true role model has gone to bigger and better things. It was his strength and dedication as a teacher that influenced me to do well in school and it was from his determination with the troubled students that taught me some of the determination that helped me through bootcamp and will help me through my next couple deployments. Although he is now in a better place I regret that the youth of the future will miss his great influence. Thank God for great men and amazing teachers.
With all due respect,

I heard Dr. Wright speak at an assembly when I was in fifth grade at Lincoln Ave. Academy. His words inspired me and made me want to strive for excellence. I graduated in 2005 in the top 10 percent of my class at Lakeland High School and it was all because the message of education and excellence hit home with me a long time ago. Thank you Dr. Wright, gone but not forgotten.

Clint Wright is a name that has always brought a smile to our families face. His name has been mentioned often, considering that we only saw him on occasion. When anyone of us would have the pleasure of running into him he would start down the laundry list of family members, never leaving anyone out. I was always amazed at how interested he was in knowing that everyone was doing well. I know that our LORD and the Angels are rejoicing at the site of him. I'm sure that a multitude of angels have welcomed him warmly and he is beginning to learn and call them all by name like he did us. Our thoughts and prayers are with you.
