Karla BLUMRICH Obituary

Published by Saskatoon StarPhoenix from Nov. 9 to Nov. 12, 2016.
Karla Blumrich (nee Jantzen)
It is with deep sadness, we announce that Karla Blumrich (nee Jantzen) passed into eternity in the early morning of Monday, November 7, 2016. Born on January 8, 1945, in Bromberg, Germany to Bruno and Ilse Jantzen. She is survived by her loving husband Gerhard; son Markus, his children Dana (Taylor), Thomas, Laura, and Anna, and their mother Colleen; daughter Monica Morin (Pierre) and their children Elijah, Erica, and Madeline; son Martin (Darlene) and their children Kepler and Theodore; her brother Peter Jantzen; and numerous cousins in Canada and Germany. Karla immigrated with her family to Horse Lake, Saskatchewan, and later moved to the Mennonite Youth Farm in Rosthern. Still in childhood, her family permanently settled in the Mayfair neighbourhood of Saskatoon. She graduated Grade 12 from Mount Royal Collegiate and then graduated from the University of Saskatchewan with a Diploma of Nursing in 1966. A career as a Registered Nurse followed, spanning 48 years in the O.R. of University and St. Paul's Hospitals. She developed great skill in hobbies including singing in choirs and small groups, volunteering in many ways with the German Cultural Centre, sewing Dirndls and creating other beautiful knitted items, and maintaining immaculate flower beds. Cancer was detected in April 2016, and "Oma" fought with dignity and great courage, in order to participate in many special moments since then. The family extends heartfelt thanks to medical professionals, including nurses at St. Paul's Hospital and oncologist Dr. Zaidi and staff at the Saskatoon Cancer Centre. Donations may be made to the Mennonite Central Committee, 600 45th St. W., Saskatoon, SK S7L 5W9 or Saskatoon Cancer Centre, 20 Campus Dr., Saskatoon, SK S7N 4H4. A Celebration of Life will take place at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, November 18 at Cornerstone Church (315 Lenore Dr. in Saskatoon) where she found spiritual growth and fellowship to last a lifetime. Arrangements are in care of MARTENS WARMAN FUNERAL HOME (306-934-4888).

Dear Gerhard and family,

I have such lovely memories of Karla as a delightful classmate, dedicated nurse, kind, caring person, beautiful singer and wonderful baker. I'm happy so many of our classmates was able to attend our 50th Nursing Class reunion at the end of May. You and Karla were such gracious hosts for our Sunday dinner ... and none of us will forget the incredible Saskatoon pie she made for the occasion.

Sending my most sincere condolences at the loss of such a beautiful lady.

Dear Gerhard and family,
My sympathy to you at this sad time. I have wonderful memories of Karla and her love of music back in our student nursing days. Her singing was such a beautiful inspiration, especially at Christmas with "Silent Night".

I'm sure I'm not the only one here who fondly recalls Mrs. Blumrich's annual platters of Christmas cookies. She was a pro baker. We were lucky to have her as our closest next door neighbor growing up. We learned from her what it meant to have "adopted" family and she became ours. I'm so grateful for the friend she was to my mom-- as two immigrant neighbors who had both become proud Canadians, and as two nurses dedicated to their profession, they really "got" each other. Sending so much love. x

Gerhard and family,
We just wanted to say how sorry we are for your loss. We are so glad that we were able to visit with you, Gerhard, and Karla, only a couple of weeks ago. How precious is life! We need to grasp each day and live it to the fullest. We will remember Karla as a dear friend, devoted mom, awesome nurse, amazing cook, seamstress, knitter...and the list goes on! But most of all we will remember her kind, giving heart. We will keep you all in prayer during this time of grieving. God bless, Dave & Peggy

It was a great honour to be able to have worked with Karla. She was very traditional and always had great insight on things from the past and future. I loved hearing all about the things she did with German club and how many different events she went to. I loved seeing Karla and her husband together at social events true love is so wonderful to see. Also hearing and seeing her latest craft project on breaks in the staff room. She had oh soo many great talents. Take care Karla and RIP. To your family and friends remember to celebrate the great memories you made and wonderful times together at this difficult time.
