David Powell Obituary

David C. Powell

Muncie - David C. Powell, age 52, passed away early Wednesday morning, March 6, 2019 at I.U. Health Ball Memorial Hospital.

David was born February 28, 1967. He graduated from Delta High School in 1985 and Ball State University in 1990 with a bachelor's degree in Information System Management. David had the gift of being able to fix computers and understand technology. He worked at Ball State University for nearly 30 years, which included setting up and maintaining servers and desktop computers, tracking down network security and internet issues, and solving major technology issues with companies like Microsoft. David also co-founded Irving Computing, a computer retail store located in the Muncie Mall for several years.

He was a loving husband, father, son, and friend who was always willing to help with any project. In his time away from technology, David was an avid marksman and collected Star Wars memorabilia. He enjoyed camping with his family and playing video games. David was a member of Destiny Christian Center International in Muncie.

Survivors include his wife of 27 years, Wendy; a daughter, Emily Powell; a son, Sam Powell, both of Muncie. David's parents, Sam and Jewell Powell of Eaton and two sisters, Jenny (Tony) Moore of Speedway and Cindy (Carl) Rambaud of Peoria, Illinois, his father-in-law, Frank H. Froehlke, of Muncie, a sister-in-law, Darlene Powell, of Georgia, several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and cousins also survive.

David was preceded in death by his brother Steve Powell.

Services to celebrate David's life will be held at 6:00 p.m on Monday, March 11, 2019 at Destiny Christian Center International 5000 E Centennial Ave., Muncie 47303 with Bishop Keith O'Neal officiating. Private burial will be made at Eaton Union Cemetery

Wendy, Emily and Sam,

Prayers for your loss. It's been over 15 years since I've been in touch with him (and others) since moving away from Muncie. Working (and playing LAN games) with him was a great time. He was an all around great guy who always seemed to stand out from those around him. I learned many of my 'techie' skills from David and probably a thing or two about not taking myself too seriously. My thoughts are with you all.

I had the privilege of working with Dave after I joined the staff in the President's Office in September 2017. Dave was a breath of fresh air every time he came to visit, cracking jokes with us as he worked on our computers, passing time with stories about Star Wars or his kids. It was hard to watch Dave's condition deteriorate as the months passed, but he was stoic about his condition and never used it as an excuse not to be the best at his job. That was such a powerful lesson to me. In his last months on campus, I started coming to see him at Bracken Library. I knew he appreciated the gesture, as it was harder for him to be as mobile as he once was, but it was good for me, too. Because I got to see the way Dave persevered, and the way his team lifted him up so that he could work as long as he could. He was a colleague and a friend, and I will miss him and his humor (especially the way he would tease me for being a Mac person!) I just wanted his family to know how often he talked about all of you. It was obvious from our conversations that he deeply loved his kids and was fiercely proud of them. I hope all of you know how many people he touched here at Ball State. I won't forget him, that's for sure.

I will miss you David. Jeff used to say that Dave was the smartest man he knew. He said that there wasn't anything that David couldn't do when it came to computers. David you will be greatly miss by everyone that knew you.

We worked together for over 20 years at Ball State. He was always generous with his time and energy. He enjoyed a good joke, but in telling and hearing one. Dave was one person you never got tired of, because he was so honest and forthright. I will truly miss seeing him again.

David has a big impact on me as a child. He was my older cousin. He introduced me to Star Wars, GI JOE, and all sorts of cool things that I'll never forget. We spent many Spring Breaks together at the Sea Horse Ranch in Florida, and probably spent a fortune in the arcade at the Holiday Inn South Atlanta. David was always very kind and patient with me, even though I was much younger, and probably extremely annoying to him. RIP DC and thank you for the impact you had on me.

We all miss Dave so very much. He was a great man to have around when you needed encouragement or a bit of knowledge on just about everything. Didn't matter if it was technology or home improvement or anything in between he often had a solution. The love he held for his family was apparent in his devotion, he always spoke of them kindly. Good family man. Dave ran on his own time, I called it Dave's time.

Praying for the family as God comforts and surrounds them with His love and peace.

Just the simple fact that he is missed so much is a testimony to how much he was loved by all that were blessed enough to know him.
