Carol SEBOLD Obituary

SEBOLD Carol (Shupp) "Shuppie" Carol Shupp Sebold, 71, a renowned artist and Toledo native passed away June 7, 2010, as a result of complications from a recent surgery. Carol was a successful marine and landscape artist whose studio and residence were in Camden, Maine. Carol was born February 9, 1939. As a grade school student she attended classes at the Toledo Museum of Art on Saturday mornings. "Shuppie" was a 1957 DeVilbiss graduate and was inducted into the DeVilbiss Hall of Fame in 1988. After graduating from the University of Toledo, Carol taught at Libbey and Start high schools and in Ida, MI. In 1973 Carol moved to Camden to pursue her art career. She still had close ties to Toledo, visiting often and maintained a close relationship with her former classmates. Carol has donated her work to local charities such as Toledo Children's Hospital. Carol was a member of the American Society of Marine Artists and a former member of the Toledo Artists Club and has taught at the highly regarded Wooden Boat School and on several Maine windjammers. Though she taught workshops all over the U.S., her recent association with Crystal Cruise Lines allowed her to tour the world teaching and lecturing. Carol's primary medium was watercolor, but she also excelled in oils. Her work has been selected for many juried shows and is exhibited in several galleries throughout the eastern United States and the Caribbean. Numerous private and corporate collections both in America and abroad include her work. Carole was preceded in death by parents, Ralph and Dorothy Shupp and her special aunt, Bernita Marlow, whose influence was instrumental in Carol's pursuit of art. Surviving are her partner of 25 years, Mac Murphy; daughter, Robin Chalk (Rutley), son, Scott Sebold (Kimber Lee Clark) all of Maine; sisters, Donna Cherry (Frank) of Toledo and Janet O'Connor (Paul) of Sun City Center, FL; brother, Dan Shupp of Millbury, OH; many nieces and nephews and her large family of friends far and wide. A memorial service will be held in Camden, ME. A scholarship fund has been set up to assist art students. Donations may be made to Carol S. Sebold Fine Art Scholarship Fund at Camden National Bank, 2 Elm St., Camden, ME 04843.

We are so sorry for your loss and the loss of her talent for the rest of us. We enjoy a beautiful Sebold painting of Otter Cove above our fireplace, keeping us in Maine all year long though we live in Philadelphia eleven months of the year. From what I've read, I wish we had a chance to meet the artist that is so much a part of our life.

The day I met my favorite artist. What a classy lady!

I only met Carol last year and we had a lovely chat at the Camden Art show. I was shocked to learn of her death on Saturday when we visited her booth in Camden. Luckily, I have many reminders of Carol all through our home as I have been a collector for more than 25 years. I love everyone of them, especially the orginal water color that we bought many years ago. Carol's art reminded me of my beloved Maine while we lived in Rochester NY for almost 40 years. Now we are back in Maine and her paintings seem to say--"glad we're home." I just bought Sunrise last year. She had trouble writing because of her shoulder surgery. My sympathies to all those who loved Carol. Her work will keep her in our hearts forever.

Dear Robin, & Scott,
Carol was one of my best friends, when living in Temperance. I also went to DeVilbiss, but did not know her then. I also, took a couple of art lessons in her garage, on Apache Trail. She charged a $1.00 a lesson. We also played cards together, once a month, at each other houses. Their was 12 of us. Two tables played Bridge, & we played Euchare. She also made a mean fondue. I have thought of her often, thru the years. I also have one of her watercolors, which I have hanging on my walls, no matter where I lived. Gwen Gilman Sniadecki Krouse, Grad, 1958 DeVilbiss H.S.

Robin and Scott,
I am so sorry for the loss of your mom. I was a neighbor in Temperance and took art lessons from your mom. I know that my dad had been to Maine and visited your mom many years ago and our Moms were very good friends and both graduates of DeVilbiss. My prayers are with you and your families. We have several of Carol's watercolors that we bought while on vacations in Maine. We love them dearly and they always have bought a smile to my face. We shall miss this wonderful artist and beautiful woman.

I met Carol when she was at cedars recovering from her knee surgery. I was one of her CNA's. I thought Carol was one of the most interesting and caring people I have met. I was so surprised and saddened to hear of her death. Please give my love and prayers to all her family. She was an amazing!

I first met Carol at the Scituate (RI) Art festival and fell in love with her water colors. I purchased my first water color there and then. Over the years I continued to purchase more and commissioned Carol to do a special painting of her trip to Greece. I will miss seeing her when I revisit Camden and Lincolnville.

To Carol's family my deepest condolences. She was a very nice lady.

What sad information we received via my brother who lives in the Toledo area.
Just this past weekend we were there touring.....The Glass Museum and the Art Museum which also hold many happy memories. We attended Church at St. Paul's Lutheran on Sunday where Carol and I first met in Miss Ruthies first grade sunday school class. It was there that we formed our earliest bonds. Then on to high school at DeVilbiss.
Everyone loved Carol (Shuppie). She didn't know that there were cliques in high school. She was a member of all of them. She spent the lunch hour socializing, jumping from table to table.
How we cherish the memories of our trip to Camden, seeing Carol and meeting Mac with whom she shared so much in common. The two pictures we purchased there (one original because that was all we could afford.. ha!) and one print are a permanent fixture in our living room. And....what a surprise to find a dear friend has one hanging on her dining room wall. , She couldn't believe that I really knew Carol! Carol was a nationally known artist.
Carol loved life and lived every day with joy. She will be greatly missed by her many friends and certainly by her family and her partner Mac.
Our deepest sympathies to all of you.
Sent with love,

I remember buying my first original watercolor from Carol when she invited me to her studio back in 1982. I am the proud owner of three of Carol's lighthouse paintings and have fond memories of the time I knew her when I lived in Camden.

Carol was an inspiration to me as someone who embraced life to the fullest. I feel privileged to have had the opportunity to know her in recent months as a fellow "dancing queen." I send sincere condolences to those who loved her. She will remain in my heart as an inspiration for what is possible in our brief times on this earth. Sheila Szafran, The Cedars

Carol was always "lighthearted, happy," individual. As a fellow classmate, we could always look forwrd to Carol attending our Reunions. Also the August dance at Centennial Terrace. May God Bless Her Spirit. Jane Giha Heltebrake, DHS '57

Donna, I have such fond memories of Carol and my visits to Camden. Carol was such an influence in my life ....teaching me the appreciation of art, the beauty of Camden and especially Acadia National Park in Bar Harbor, and of course the fun of tobogganing! I treasure the art work I have of hers. She was a very special person. Bless all of you.
