Rodney Rheiner Obituary

Published by Porter Loring Mortuary North on Mar. 10, 2020.
Rodney Rex Rheiner, age 58, passed away on Tuesday, March 10, 2020, in San Antonio. He was born on November 14, 1961 to Dan and Paula (Zoe) Rheiner in San Antonio, Texas. Rex grew up in Terrell Hills and attended Alamo Height High School where he met the love of his life Linda Roberts. Rex Rheiner was a family man. On May 18, 1994 he had his first-born son John Bradley Rheiner, and two years later had his youngest son Jeffrey Allen Rheiner. Rex was everything to his two sons. He was their mentor, role model, protector, friend, and leader. Rex was a dedicated husband to Linda for over 36 years, and grandfather (Opa) to Audrey and Bradley Rheiner. Family was the most valuable thing in his life. Rex started his career in law enforcement on August 26, 1985 with the Bexar County Sheriff's Office and served the county for 4 years. In June 22, 1989, he transitioned over to Terrell Hills Police Department for a brief period, until finding his final police home with Converse Police Department (CPD) in August 15, 1989. In 1993, after only a few years on the job with CPD, Rex was able accomplish a magnificent feat. He was able to recover a child from Jordan, who was abducted by a noncustodial parent, and return her safely back to the United States. In 2003, Rex attended the Federal Bureau of Investigation's (FBI) National Academy in Quantico, Virginia that brought great value back to the CPD. Throughout his career he served many roles with the CPD (Detective, Captain, Firearms Instructor, SWAT Team Member, Arson Investigator, and Police Department Spokesman). In 2007, Rodney Rex Rheiner was promoted to Assistant Chief of Police in the Converse Police Department and serviced in that role for over 10 years. Finally, after a long career of 32 years in law enforcement, he retired March 31, 2017 to spend more time with his loved ones. Rodney Rex Rheiner was an outstanding member in the community. He was a beloved member of The San Antonio Stock Show and Rodeo as a Life Member for over 27 years. In the Special Sales Committee, he played a vital role in making sure that the auctions were run as smoothly as possible and helped tens of thousands obtain scholarships for higher education. He was an active member of Mount Calvary Lutheran Church as an Usher helping the congregation and bringing his grandchildren to Sunday school. Rex also was a Boy Scouts of America Assistant Scout Master for Troop 398. He led many adventures in his role with the Boy Scouts, but his proudest moment would have been leading a troop to the National Scout Jamboree in 2010, with his two sons. As police officer he was also active in the community. For over 20 years Rex helped put on Project Graduation which was a drug and alcohol-free graduation party for Judson High School Seniors. In addition, he also was a member of the Fraternal Order of Police which took Boysville children to the circus every year. He was preceded in death by his father, Dan Rheiner Jr.; mother, Paula (Zoe) Rheiner. Rex is survived by his wife, Linda Rheiner; children, John Rheiner and Jeff Rheiner; grandchildren, Audrey Rheiner and Bradley Rheiner; brothers, Dan Rheiner III (Carolyn) and Stephen Rheiner (Deborah); and sister, Suzanne Kempf (Boyd). SERVICE WEDNESDAY, MARCH 18, 2020 10:00 A.M. MOUNT CALVARY LUTHERAN CHURCH 308 MOUNT CALVARY DRIVE Pastor David Reedy will officiate. Interment will follow in Holy Cross Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Dan Rheiner 3rd, Steven Rheiner, Daniel Rheiner 4th, Boyd Kempf, Robert Walker, Rick Jamison, Chris Bazany, and Paul Byrne. I'm going to miss a good Friend and FOP member. He always kept our group together by keeping the best records. My prayers and condolences to Linda who had the best husband a wife could have. He always talked about his family and what they did. Again he really Loved his family. We wonder why such a great person has to be taken away so young but we know he will be watching over his family and those he loved.

Officer Rheiner Rex,

Thank you so much for being a light and a permanent fixture in everyone's lives that you have touched. I remember the days just like they were yesterday when we were getting ready for explorer competitions for post 902 that was led by Rita and Dan Creswell. You and many of the officers there at Converse Police Department were always there to offer us seeds of your knowledge and lead us to gaining so many victories and trophies. I am so forever grateful and thankful for the seeds that you planted in me. I will forever carry lessons that you taught me in my heart. It just breaks my heart to know that such a good man who gave his life ultimately to protect and serve his community was taken away from us..... even to the end and protecting and serving as what you've done because as much as we hate not having you here, God knew your duty on this earth God, just wish it wasn't you but you dedicated your life to serving the community and you gave your life. God bless you Officer Rheiner Rex

My condolences to all family and friends, Converse Police Department, Every Police Department that he has worked with in the San Antonio rodeo association. God bless

I will miss our monthly FOP dinners every first Monday of the month. Rex, Mike Harris, and myself would get together that first Monday and then sit around on the restaurant patio and enjoy cigars and each others friendship and war stories. I retired from NYPD and it was hard to compete at times but always an enjoyable evening. We each looked forward to that monthly escape. Inevitably, Rex would talk some about his boys who he was so proud of. My prayers are with Linda. She was a cop's wife with a strong constitution. She will weather this storm but she will need all our help for support. This she will have. I miss my friend. May he now rest in peace.

Was so looking forward to reconnecting with Rex when we relocate to the hill country. I have such fond memories of our summers at Smith Point and visits to San Antonio. When my youngest son Mark was considering a career in law enforcement, Rex was the person I wanted him to meet for counsel. Rex had never met Mark, but insisted on meeting him halfway between Houston and San Antonio to share his experience in law enforcement and offer guidance. I am so appreciative of his investment in my son.

Will miss you greatly cousin!

It was an honor and a privilege to have known Rex. His positive and upbeat demeanor made every encounter a positive one. Rex was a professional who was dedicated to his department and community, loyal to his Chief and his coworkers and a role model for thousands of youth he interacted with throughout his law enforcement career. Although his time here on earth has come to an end, we can be assured that due to his faith and love for our Lord, that he is in a place most of us can only dream of! The legacy he leaves behind will encourage and inspire his boys and untold others to be responsible young men. citizens and productive members of society. Well done Rex.. You will be missed by many!

Dear Linda, I have so many great memories of having fun with you and Rex, Robert, and Christi , back in the day. No matter how many years had passed since we hung out together, whenever I saw Rex at the rodeo, it seemed like no time at all. He always had that big smile and would say "let's all get together again soon ." I sure wish we had. He was such a kind soul and will be greatly missed by everyone who knew him. My heart goes out to you . Hugs and Prayers for you and the family.
