Robert Rice Obituary

TUSCALOOSA Robert Norton "Bobby" Rice, Jr., age 73, of Tuscaloosa, died June 2, 2009, at Forest Manor Nursing Home in Northport. Services will be 10 a.m. Friday at First Presbyterian Church with Dr. Charles Durham officiating and Tuscaloosa Memorial Chapel Funeral Home directing. Visitation will be following the service at the church. A private family burial will take place in Tuscaloosa Memorial Park.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Carolyn Burchfield Rice, and his son, Robert N. Rice, III.

Survivors include his close friend, Judy Phipps of Tuscaloosa; his daughter, Caroline Rice Howell (Nick) of San Marino, Calif.; his brother, William James Rice of Troy; his dear great-aunt, Mary Elva Rice of Montgomery; and his grandchildren, Lucy Williams Howell (age 7) and Samuel Burchfield Howell (age 5) of San Marino, Calif.

Bobby was a devoted son, father, and grandfather. He served in the U.S. Army for 30 years and retired from the Army Reserve as a full Colonel. A graduate of the University of Alabama, he was a lifelong fan of Alabama sports, especially Alabama football. Mr. Rice served as an associate athletic director for the university, overseeing athletic facilities, until his retirement in 2006.

Pallbearers will be Rush Rice, Bill Rice, Bobby Rice, Chris Hayslip, Don Crump, and Howard Burchfield.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to First Presbyterian Church, the American Heart Association, the American Diabetes Association, or the DCH Cancer Center.
