Richard Ullrich "Chuck" Palmer

1939 - 2021

Richard (Chuck) Ullrich Palmer, 82, of Bourne passed away on March 1, 2021. He was born January 15, 1939 in Manchester, NH, son of Eleanor F. Ullrich. In 1955, Eleanor married Gordon F. Palmer and he adopted Richard upon graduating from high school in 1956. From birth through high school his name was Richard Ullrich but he derived the nickname "Chuck" from family and friends because he was a baseball pitcher, which in baseball lingo, is referred to as a "chucker."

Mr. Palmer grew up in Manchester attending elementary school at Brown School where he was president of his class. He is a 1956 graduate of West High School where he was a four-year varsity player on the baseball team. He is a former member of the Cub and Boy Scouts and a long-time newspaper carrier for the Manchester (NH) Union-Leader and NH Sunday News for many years. His sports activities were primarily organized baseball consisting of Little League, Babe Ruth, American Legion, high school, college at the University of New Hampshire and the Manchester (NH) Red Sox of the semi-pro Northeast League. From 1956 to 1960 he attended the University of New Hampshire majoring in Business Administration and was a member of Theta Chi Fraternity. From 1960 to 1962 he was the area representative for the Manchester (NH) Union-Leader in Peterborough, NH followed by five years as circulation manager of what was then known as the Cape Cod Standard-Times in Hyannis, MA. He later spent twenty-three and one-half years culminating as Marketing Director for Enterprise Publishing Co. in Falmouth, MA where he oversaw the operation of the advertising and circulation departments, Prior to retiring in 2002, he worked for twelve and one-half years at the Admiralty Inn in Falmouth as Advertising Director for J&M Taylor Co., owners of five Cape Cod motels. Early in post-retirement he and his wife spent many winters in Treasure Island, FL but in later years remained on Cape Cod exclusively in order to attend their grandchildren's high school sports activities as well as spending more family time with them and their daughter and son-in-law.

Mr. Palmer is a member and former trustee of the First Congregational Church of Falmouth, former member of the Falmouth Jaycees and served on the Board of Directors of Oak Grove Cemetery. He was also a former Falmouth town meeting member and teller and active in Falmouth Little League, youth hockey and Babe Ruth Baseball serving as officer, sports reporter and team manager in both baseball and hockey. He was the founder of the Falmouth Little League 9- & 10-year-old tournament. He also was a reporter for many Falmouth high school hockey games and was a coach of the first highly successful Cape Cod Senior Babe Ruth baseball all-star team that finished fourth in the nation in 1986. He was an avid fan of all Boston sports teams and enjoyed thoroughbred horse racing in addition to reading the daily newspaper and books.

Family includes his wife of 60 years, Carola H, (Willett) Palmer; daughter, Lori Palmer McEvoy and her husband Mark F. McEvoy; granddaughter, Ashley Chandler and her husband Jonathan Chandler; and grandson, Matthew C. Haley; sister-in-law Suzanne B. (Willett) Nixon and her husband Hilary Nixon; plus many cousins, nieces and nephews.

Mr. Palmer was predeceased by his beloved son, Eric Scott Palmer; brother-in-law Kari J. Willett; and his mother and stepfather.

Visitation will be held on Saturday March 13, 2021 from 11:00am - 1:00pm

in the Chapman, Cole & Gleason Funeral Home, 475 Main Street, Falmouth MA.

A funeral service will follow at 1:00pm in the funeral home. Burial will follow in Oak Grove Cemetery, Jones Rd., Falmouth.
