Peter C. Clapman of Bethesda, MD, passed away of COVID complications on Tuesday, February 9, 2021 at the age of 84. As senior vice president and chief investment counsel at the retirement investment firm TIAA, Peter was a leader in the movement of institutional investors to challenge ineffective or dishonest company management. After spearheading reforms in the United States, he helped knit together major investors abroad into the International Corporate Governance Network. Since retirement, his expertise has been sought by boards and institutions including the U.S. National Association of Corporate Directors, the IRRC Institute, the AARP mutual funds board, iPass, Governance for Owners, Millennium Management and PJT Camberview. He is remembered fondly by his colleagues for his humor, integrity and wisdom.Peter was born in Kew Gardens, Queens, attended Stuyvesant High School, Princeton and Harvard Law School. He was a master barbecuer on the Big Green Egg and recently strived to make the perfect omelet. He was a fan of the Jets and Princeton women's lacrosse and men's basketball; loved wine, travel and classic movies; and was an avid reader, especially WWII history and literature.In 2016, Peter and Barbara moved from New York to Bethesda, MD, to be near their daughters and families. They found a warm community of friends, new and renewed.Devoted husband of Barbara Clapman (55 years together); loving father of Leah (Richard) and Alice (Robert); and cherished grandfather of Simon, Eve, Zack and Felix.
